91.5 KRCC (91.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting National Public Radio and eclectic music, licensed to Colorado Springs, Colorado and owned by Colorado College.[1]
History
91.5 KRCC began in 1944 as a public address system for the Colorado College campus. It became a carrier current two years later. In April 1951, it received the first noncommercial FM license in the state of Colorado, operating from a World War II surplus transmitter.
Originally a training program for radio and speech students, it became a conventional college radio station in 1968 after Colorado College dropped radio and speech classes. In 1978, the station opened its microphones to the greater Colorado Springs community, paving the way for it to become Colorado's third NPR member station in 1984. From the 1980s onward, it built a series of translators to help better penetrate its largely mountainous service area.
91.5 KRCC currently provides NPR and nationally distributed public radio programming as well as coverage of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico through its newsroom and producers. Music is provided by staff M-F from 9am to 1pm and by volunteers after 8pm.
