Kalapatti is a suburb of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 17 km North-East direction, within the city limits. Now Kalapatti is merged with Corporation of Coimbatore. Because of invasion of IT companies surrounding in and around Kalapatti like Peelamedu, HopeCollege, Saravanampatti there is a fast rapid improvement in this place. The Coimbatore International Airport is just about 7 km from Kalapatti.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Kalapatti had a population of 22,089. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kalapatti has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 65%. In Kalapatti, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Agriculture

Kalapatti had agriculture as its key business till late 80s. Cotton industry was also famous. The key crop was corn and vegetables like tomato, bringal and ladies finger.

Kalapatti was the head place for the surrounding suburbs of Valiyampalayam, Vilankurichi, Veeriyampalayam, Kaikolapalayam and Mylampatti.

Commerce

At present Kalappatti is on high thrust of development. The start of Sharp industries [9] in 1976 turned the key for its developments. Later a lot of machining industries (lathes) and motor industries grew up. Today some of the world class motor pumpset brands Sharp, Ventura, Fisher and Point originate from Kalapatti . The Solar Water factory of Hykon Group companies, Hykon Solar Energy (P) Ltd is located at Kalapatti. Kalapatti has the geographical advantage of in midway between two National highways, Avinashi road NH-47 and Sathy road NH-209.

The southern part of the suburb, which is closer to NH-47, had better development when compared to the other parts of the suburbs. The southern part of the suburb known as Nehru nagar is well known for the rapid growth in recent years (1998–2009).

Educational facilities

Schools Kalappatti is famous for its international school.NGP School has been recently opened near ngp college group of KMCH with excellent infrastructural facilities for students and teachers. Academic year starts from June 2013. ANAN KIDS ACADEMY , Spread over 6 Acres, Anan Kids Academy is an initiative of Sharp Pumps, one of the leading pump manufacturers in India for the last four decades. Kalappatti has one elementary and One Higher Secondary School run by the government. There are several private high schools Suguna Vidya Niketan(CBSE) SARAN,Suguna Padmalaya International School (PIPS) both run by the Suguna Group manufacturing Pumps, Dharmasastha to name a few.

Higher education Recently higher educational institutions are coming up in this region.

Kalapatti has world class medical facilities in the close proximity.

In the southern part of the village two eye hospitals are located Aravind Eye Hospital Lotus Eye Care Centre In the western part there is one another eye hospital Sankara Eye Centre

Kovai Medical Center and Hospital - KMCH is located on the southern part

And kamala prakassam Hospital is there

The listed are hospitals with very good medical facilities. Apart from these there are a number of small clinics scattered throughout the village.

And also 2 more hospitals in Village itself.

Recent Days

In the recent days many Restaurants, Coffee Shops have opened changing Kalapatti's rustic Culture. The IT boom has caused land rates torise,so many farmers who had land sold to real estate companies at very high rates and settled in other outer areas. Lot of New Apartments are coming up in these Farm lands.

Also Midnight Clubs unofficially run in Kalapatti which is attracted by College students and IT Professionals.
