Kogalym (Russian: Когалым) is a town in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia, located on the Inguyagun River 325 kilometers (202 mi) northeast of Khanty-Mansiysk. Population: 58,181(2010 Census);[3] 55,367(2002 Census);[6] 44,297(1989 Census).[7]

History

It was founded in 1975 due to the development of the oil fields in its vicinity. It was granted town status on August 15, 1985.[5]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with one rural locality, incorporated as the town of okrug significance of Kogalym—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] As a municipal division, the town of okrug significance of Kogalym is incorporated as Kogalym Urban Okrug.[2]

Economy

Economy of the town is based on oil extraction. The headquarters of the main extraction subsidiary of Lukoil (OOO LUKOIL-Zapadnaya Sibir) is in Kogalym.

Transportation

The town is served by the Kogalym International Airport, railway station. The town is served by buses and quite a big number of taxi companies. The traffic is not congested, except during peak hours, while small traffic jams are in evidence throughout the day.

Climate

Because of location the weather in town is freezing in winter and not warm at summer. The average temperature in January is about from -30 to -40 (the minimum -62 was marked on Vatyogan oil-field on 2009) The average speed of wind is 3,1 meters per second The average humidity is 76,5%
