Kundal is a town in Palus Taluka in Sangli District of Maharashtra State, India. It is located in the Desh or Paschim Maharashtra region. The Kundal village has a population of 18,287 of which 9,432 are males, and 8,855 are females.[1]Kundal is located 40 km to the north of district headquarters Sangli, 5 km from Palus and 313 km from State capital Mumbai. Kundal is surrounded by Valva-Islampur Taluka to the west, Kadegaon Taluka to the north, Tasgaon Taluka to the east and Karad Taluka is towards the west.
History
Kundal is the region around Sangli, which was the capital of the Chalukyas. Kundal is a historical place; its ancient name was Koundinyapur. The traditions of Kundal are more than 1,600 years old. It is believed that Samavsharan of Bhagwan Parsvanath, Mahaveer, and Shrutkevali Poojya Shridhara Muni came to the region and achieved salvation. Here Lord Parsvanath’s idol is miraculous. It is said that a son of a king died due to some disease, then his newly married wife prepared an idol of Parsvanath made of Sand and goddess Padmavati and started prayers and worship with the deep heart, due to the effect of such heartly worship, her husband was resurrected. The same type of miracle is found in the story of King Satyeshwar and Queen Padmashri of Koundinyapur. Kundal was home to freedom fighters such as Krantisigha Nana Patil, G. D. Lad, Shankar Jangam, and many more. Marathi is the main language spoken. Kundal is famous for 95-year-old Maharstra Kusti Maidan. Kusti competition was held every year.[2]
Industrial zone
Kundal has an industrial area called Kranti Sugar Factory and it is the biggest in the Sangli district. The government of Maharashtra has started Forest Academy near Kranti sugar factory which is the first training academy in Maharashtra among the four top academies in India.[3] Kundal is well known for producing some of the best-quality grapes in the world. Mali grapes garden is a good example of quality grapes.[4]

- By Air: Pune Airport is 200km. Sangli Airport 45 km. Karad Airport 35 km.
- By Railway: The nearest railway station is Kirloskarwadi, which lies on the south-central railway line. The main line, just 3 km from Kundal, is connected to Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Goa, etc.
- By Road: 200 km or four hours by road from Pune. Kundal is 40 km away from Karad. Karad is around 160 km away from Pune and located on Pune-Banglore Express highway.
