Magdi Abdelghani Sayed Ahmed (born 27 July 1959; Arabic مجدي عبد الغني سيد أحمد), known as Abdelghani, is an Egyptian retired footballer who played as an attacking midfielder.

He played most of his professional career, which spanned nearly 15 years, with Al-Ahly and Beira-Mar.

Abdelghani represented Egypt at the 1990 World Cup.

Club career

Born in Cairo, Abdelghani was a first-team mainstay for several years at local Al-Ahly, before immigrating to Portugal in 1988 at the age of 29, signing with lowly S.C. Beira-Mar which he helped always maintain its first division status whilst averaging four goals per season, even though he appeared sparingly in his last year.

Abdelghani finished his career back in his country, first with El-Masry then Al-Mokawloon al-Arab. In 1987, he finished fourth in the race for African Footballer of the Year.[1]

International career

Abdelghani gained 50 caps for Egypt, representing the nation at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and scoring its only goal of the tournament, a penalty in the 1–1 group stage draw against the Netherlands.[2]

He also competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics,[3] and helped the Pharaohs win the 1986 African Cup of Nations on home soil.

His Goal In 1990 WorldCup

Egypt's National Team of football Joined 1990's World Cup for its second time in history. On 12 June, Egypt was playing a match against the Dutch National Team in the 24's qualifier, during the match Abdelghani scored his historical goal as an equalizer by a penalty shot and the match was finished with a result of 1-1. During Abdelghani's post career life, he was very proud of his goal as it was the only goal that Egypt scored in the 1990 World Cup. In media and propaganda, Abdelghani is always very careful about telling the story of his goal against the Netherlands. In Ramadan 2015 Abdelghani appeared in an advertisement of VodafoneEG Communication Company as he making a video call to Hans van Breukelen the GoalKeeper of Holand he scored his goal against him. During this video call Abdelghani started to make Breukelen remember that goal who appeared suffering from Abdelghani's continuous talk about that goal.
