Student Achievements
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Portuguese center for Pollution Prevention (C3P), jointly organised an International Workshop on Environment and Alternative Energy with the theme of "Global Collaboration in Sustainable Environmental and Alternative Energy Strategies" at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), Noordwijk, Netherlands, on 15–18 November 2011.
As part of the workshop a student presentation (both paper and poster) as organised. Students from all over the world submitted their project and posters with their research ideas to NASA. Among these proposals fifteen of them were selected of which two were from Italy, six from Portugal, five from United States of America, and Divya Krishnamoorthy and Durga Devi from Mailam Engineering College were the only participants from Asia.
Presentation by Divya and Durga
In the presentation session, the Second Year CSE Students, Ms K Divya and Ms G Durga Devi presented a paper on the topic "Ultraviolet Radiation Control Measures". They presented on the subject of ultraviolet rays, consequences of the rays and preventive methods. As part of the students' presentation, a poster competition was conducted. The students presented their ideas in the form of a poster and their performance on the topic "Ultraviolet Radiation Control Measures" won them first prize.
ISTE's Best Project Award
S. Sivasakthivelan, IV Yr, won the Indian Society for Technical Education National Award for the Best Project 2012 in Sustainable Development (Mechanical Engineering) from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarth Sahib, Punjab.
He Presented a Research Paper titled "Gas Molecular Precipitator" in Student Innovation Design Contest 2012 at IIT Madras organized by PDMA-India on 2 June 2012 and won consolation prize of Rs. 10,000. Moreover, he has published three research papers in international journals and one in national conference. He has also applied for a Patent for his research on Gas Molecule Precipitator.
Projects Under Research and Development (R&D) Team are as follows:
1. Device to alert fishermen when they cross maritime boundary
Final year ECE students J Amutha, P Ashwini, M Deepika, R Divyadevi and A Manimozhi developed a device that will alert fishermen when they cross the international maritime boundary line (IMBL) as part of their academic programme. The device will raise an alarm when the fishermen are just 10 metres from the IMBL. The device banks on the global positioning system (GPS) to identify the boundary line. The device is programmed with complete information on longitudinal and latitudinal position of the IMBL. The device will also predict natural calamities with the help of a seismic sensor, a sophisticated communication tool. This tool will caution fishermen and those living along the shore about all the calamity. The students have proposed to improve the device by introducing more functions like locating fish in the ocean.
2. Solar and EB Power Billing System Using GSM Network
Final year ECE students N.Geetha, D.Yuvasri, P.Revathy developed a device for Solar and EB Power Billing System using GSM Network. An Automatic Energy Meter Reading (AEMR) system reads the consumption of solar or EB power by adopting electronics, communication and computerized technology. The solution for residential AEMR consists of a host computer and a residential meter. The host computer records the meter readings of residential energy meters, calculates the bill amount, and cuts-off the power line if the amount is not paid within the stipulated period. The meter reading units also take care of informing about the amount of electricity usage to the consumer with the help of LCD, phone calls and messages then the required amount is credited from the customer usage account. By using this technology we can register our complaints from the residential and commercial places through GSM. An AEMR system is also used to avoid electricity theft. For any maintenance work the duration of power cut is intimated a day in advance.
