Marko Meerits (born 26 April 1992) is an Estonian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Tarvas and the Estonia national football team. Meerits is known for his long goal kicks.
Club career
Flora
Meerits made his league debut in 2008 for Flora affiliated Esiliiga club Warrior, coming on as a second-half substitute. He made two more appearances as a substitute in that season, while still playing for Flora's under-17 team.[1] For the next season he was moved to Flora's reserve team Flora II, where he became the first choice keeper, playing 29 matches.[1] In 2010, he was used as a back-up for first choice Stanislav Pedõk. In 2011, his man of the match performance in the Estonian Supercup match against Levadia, where he saved two penalties and converted one himself in the shoot-out helped him earn the starting position in the first team for the season.[2]
Vitesse
On 6 July 2011, Meerits signed a three-year deal with Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse.[3][4] On 7 August 2011, Meerits made his first team debut against Ado Den Haag coming on as a 21st-minute substitute for injured Eloy Room. He managed to keep the clean sheet as the game finished 0–0.
Emmen
On 5 July 2014, Meerits signed a two-year deal with Dutch Eerste Divisie side Emmen.[5] He made an impressive first season with a club, playing in every league match. His second season was ruined by a knee injury and he left the club in the end of the season.[6]
Tarvas
On 30 August 2016, Meerits joined Meistriliiga last-placed Tarvas. He was unable to save the team from relegation as Tarvas finished the season in last place and was relegated.
International career
In December 2010, Meerits was called up by the Estonia national team manager Tarmo Rüütli to the squad facing China and Qatar.[7] On 18 December 2010, he was substituted in just a minute before the final whistle in the match against China, getting his first cap for Estonia alongside Flora teammates Rauno Alliku and Markus Jürgenson.[8] In June 2011, he was called up again for friendly matches against Chile and Uruguay and played full 90 minutes in a 0–4 defeat against Chile.[9][10][11]
