Miss Universe 2011, the 60th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant, was held on 12 September 2011 at Citibank Hall, São Paulo, Brazil. Leila Lopes of Angola was crowned the winner by outgoing titleholder Ximena Navarrete of Mexico, becoming the fourth African country to win the title after South Africa in 1978, Namibia in 1992 and Botswana in 1999.[1] Contestants from 89 countries and territories participated in this year's pageant, surpassing the previous record of 86 contestants in 2006.

Replacements
- Curaçao – Evalina van Putten replaced Monifa Jansen since Jansen did not meet the age requirements stipulated by the Miss Universe Organization. Jansen was born in March 1993.[11]
- El Salvador – Mayra Aldana replaced Alejandra Ochoa after Alejandra suffered from chronic respiratory illness and was not able to compete.[12]
Designations
- Denmark – Sandra Amer was appointed as Miss Universe Denmark 2011 after a casting call took place.
- Egypt – Sara El-Khouly was appointed as Miss Universe Egypt 2011 after no national pageant was held due to the political crisis.
- Greece – Iliana Papageorgiou was appointed by the Star Hellas organization to represent Greece at Miss Universe 2011.
- Guatemala – Alejandra Barillas was appointed as Miss Universe Guatemala 2011 in a special ceremony. Barillas was the original representative to Miss Universe 2010 but due to an injury she could not attend. One of her runners-up (Jessica Scheel) took her place.
- Kazakhstan – Valeriya Aleinikova was appointed to represent Kazakhstan after the Miss Kazakhstan organization dropped the franchise and a new organization took over.
- Montenegro – Nikolina Loncar was appointed to represent Montenegro after she could not compete in 2010 because she did not meet the minimum age requirement.
- Vietnam – Vũ Thị Hoàng My was appointed to represent Vietnam after the pageant organizers were unable to host a beauty pageant. The permission was granted by the Ministry of Culture of Vietnam, which authorizes the international representation of the nation in events of any kind.
Withdrawals
- Norway – The Miss Norway 2011 pageant was held on 28 August, since the date of arrival of contestants is on 18 August, They decided that Sara Nicole Andersen, Miss Universe Norway 2011 to send on Miss Universe 2012. They officially withdrew at Miss Universe 2011.
- Zambia – No contest held.
