Neurohop (also known as Neuro) is a genre of music that originated around mid 2011 to 2012. The music is characterized by its dark and aggressive atmosphere similar to neurofunk.

History

Neurohop originated from the subgenre of drum and bass, Neurofunk. Neurofunk is quite similar, but different in many ways.

The origins of Neurohop can trace back to the person who coined the term, Kursa.^[1] Kursa is a music producer, who created the term to describe his work, making a 15-minute mix of 9 tracks that he had made, titling it "Let's call it Neurohop". This is the earliest known time that the word was used and, the pioneer of the genre still continues to make music to this day, but has made a rather unfortunately, largely unnoticed impact on the electronic scene. The original has since been deleted due to Kursa cleaning his page, but the same mix can be found at twine.fm, re-uploaded by himself.^[2]

Characteristics

The main characteristics of the Neurohop genre generally are things such as:

• Filtered and distorted basses
• Multiband frequency splitting basses
• Sampled basses (known more informally as a "Reese" bass, from a sound sampled from "Just Want Another Chance" by Reese)
• Rhythmic bass repetitions
• Heavy hitting and/or processed drums
• Pitch-bending bass
• Hip-hop tempo (generally around 80–115 BPM)
• Glitch-based audio
• Time-based audio stretching and warping
