North Governorate (Arabic: الشمال, Aš Šamāl) is one of the governorates of Lebanon. Its capital is Tripoli.
Districts
The North Governorate is divided into districts, or aqdya. The districts are listed below (capitals in parentheses):
- Akkar (Halba)
- Batroun (Batroun)
- Bsharri (Bsharri)
- Koura (Amioun)
- Miniyeh-Danniyeh District (Miniyeh)
- Tripoli (Tripoli)
- Zgharta (Zgharta / Ehden)
Religion in the North Governorate
The Sunni denomination makes up the majority of the population with 54.4%; Christians make the second largest group with 41.6%; and Alawites are the last with 3.7%.
Areas with large Muslim populations include Tripoli, Akkar, and the Miniyeh-Danniyeh districts. On the other hand, the Christian population is largely centered in the Batroun, Koura, Zgharta, and Bsharri districts.
