Orders, decorations, and medals of Indonesia

Awards and decorations of the Republic of Indonesia are both military and civilian awards for service and personal contributions to the Republic of Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Constitution, Chapter III Article 15: "The President grants designations, awards, and other distinctions that regulated by state acts".

Awards and decorations of the Republic of Indonesia are divided into two categories, Stars and Medals. Names of both the awards and decorations incorporated abundant Sanskrit words, as usually employed by the government in many other awards and names of institutions.

Stars of the Republic of Indonesia

Bintang Republik Indonesia ("Star of the Republic of Indonesia")

Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipradana

The "Star of the Republic of Indonesia" (BRI) is awarded to a person who has given extraordinary service to the integrity, viability, and greatness of Indonesia. It is the highest decoration awarded by the Government of The Republic of Indonesia. The 1st class of the star strictly exclusive awarded only to former and current president of Republic of Indonesia.

The BRI is awarded in 5 classes:

1st Class Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna
2nd Class Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipradana
3rd Class Bintang Republik Indonesia Utama
4th Class Bintang Republik Indonesia Pratama
5th Class Bintang Republik Indonesia Nararya

Bintang Mahaputera ("Star of Mahaputera")

The "Star of Mahaputera" (BMP) is awarded to a person who has given extraordinary service to the Motherland in certain areas outside the military. It is the second highest decoration awarded by the Government of The Republic of Indonesia.

The BMP is awarded in 5 classes:

1st Class Bintang Mahaputera Adipurna
2nd Class Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana
3rd Class Bintang Mahaputera Utama
4th Class Bintang Mahaputera Pratama
5th Class Bintang Mahaputera Nararya

Bintang Jasa ("Bravery Star Decoration")

Awarded for civil bravery and courage in times of adversity.

Bintang Sakti ("The Sacred Star")

The highest medal bestowed upon combat heroism action, individually or as a unit.

Bintang Dharma ("Military Distinguished Service Star")

Has the same grade with "Bintang Sakti", but bestowed upon the most distinguished service in the military.

Bintang Gerilya ("Guerrilla Star")

Bintang Gerilya

Given to military personnel served in the guerrilla operations in the independence war (1945-1949). No longer awarded and extinct.

Bintang Garuda ("Garuda Star")

Given to the Air Force personnel served in the independence war. No longer awarded and extinct.

Bintang Sewindu Angkatan Perang ("Armed Forces Eight Years’ Service Star")

Awarded in 1953 to mark the 8th year or windu year since the foundation of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. No longer awarded and extinct.

Bintang Yudha Dharma ("Defence Meritorious Service Star")

The highest award given to those serving in foreign armed services.

Awarded in three classes:[1]

1st Class Bintang Yudha Dharma Utama[2][3] Also translated as "The Grand Meritorious Military Order – 1st Class"[4]
2nd Class Bintang Yudha Dharma Pratama
3rd Class Bintang Yudha Dharma Nararya

The ribbons of the 2nd and 1st Classes are identical, with the addition of (respectively) one and two central narrow red stripes.

Bintang Kemanusiaan ("Humanities Star")

Dormant award. Unclear status.

Bintang Kartika Eka Paksi ("Army Meritorious Service Star")

Awarded strictly exclusive to officer of the Indonesian Army for meritorious service to the nation.

Bintang Jalasena ("Navy Meritorious Service Star")

Awarded strictly exclusive to officers and senior ratings and NCOs of the Indonesian Navy for meritorious service to the nation.

2nd Class Bintang Jalasena Pratama
3rd Class Bintang Jalasena Nararya

Bintang Swabhuwana Paksa ("Air Force Meritorious Service Star")

Awarded strictly exclusive to officers and NCOs of the Indonesian Air Force for meritorious service to the nation.

Bintang Bhayangkara ("National Police Meritorious Service Star")

Awarded strictly exclusive to selected personnel of the Indonesian National Police for meritorious service to the nation and in helping to uphold the rule of law. For the 1st class, eligible personnel must at least Brigadier General rank and hold commanding position at any unit in the Indonesian National Police. 2nd and 3rd Classes are awarded to all officers below general rank and non-commissioned personnel respectively. Star awarded after approval authorized by Chief of Indonesian National Police and the President of Indonesia.

Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma ("Cultural Merit Star")

Awarded to people involved in the promotion, education and preservation of Indonesian culture and arts.

Bintang Penegak Demokrasi ("Star of the Defenders of Democracy")

Awarded to civilians for service in upholding democratic principles.

Medals of the Republic of Indonesia

Satyalancana Kesetiaan 8, 16 dan 24 Tahun ("Military Long Service Medals: 8, 16 and 24 years of Service")

Given to personnel of the Indonesian National Armed Forces for years of loyal and faithful service to the people of Indonesia. This is one of only few awards that may be bestowed upon enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces.

Satyalencana Dwija Sistha ("Military Instructor Service Medals")

Awarded strictly exclusive to officer at Military Academy or Military Drill Camp.

Satyalencana Gerakan Operasi Militer I-IX ("Military Operational Service Medals I-IX")

Dormant award. This one of few award may bestowed upon enlist personnel.

Satyalencana Bhakti ("Wounded Medal")

Given to wounded personnel of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. This is one of only few awards that may be bestowed upon enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces.

Satyalencana Peristiwa ("Commemoration Medals")

Dormant award.

Satyalencana Teladan ("Good Conduct Medal")

Awarded strictly exclusive to officer of the armed forces at any military branch who show proper conduct and become role model for their subordinates.

Satyalencana Penegak ("Medal for Combat Against Communists")

No longer awarded since massive extermination program for communist insurgency in 1965-1966 and the fall of Sukarno's old order regime in 1967.

Satyalencana Wira Dharma ("Malaysia/Northern Borneo Military Campaign Medal")

Obsolete award and extinct following the collapse of Sukarno regime who failed to prevent Malaya Federation gaining independence and normalization diplomatic relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia. This is one of only few awards that may be bestowed upon enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces.

Obsolete award and extinct following secession of East Timor from Indonesia.

Satyalancana Pendidikan ("Education Service Medal")

Awarded to teachers, professors and school and college administrative staff for dedicated service to the education sector.

Satyalancana Karya Satya 10, 20 dan 30 Tahun ("Civil Service Long Service Medals: 10, 20 and 30 Years of Service")

Awarded to distinguished individuals of the civil service for years of loyal and faithful service and dedication.
