phpList is Open Source software for managing mailing lists. It is designed for sending emails such as newsletters, press releases and marketing campaigns to a list of subscribers. It is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database to store information. phpList is free and open-source software subject to the terms of the Affero General Public License (AGPL). The software is developed and provided as a hosted service by phpList Ltd., a company registered in the United Kingdom. In 2015 phpList sent 23 billion emails on behalf of its users. [4]

Overview

phpList can manage a list of email subscribers and send email campaign messages to large numbers of subscribers at a time. It sends emails via a web interface, including account management options for campaign managers and message recipients. The subscription management, registration, personal data changes, analytics, bounce processing, and unsubscribe requests are automated.

Subscriptions to one or more lists are made through a subscription page that can be integrated into a third party website.[5] Information which is requested during registration – for example the country of residence, language, date of birth, favorite food, etc. – is determined by the list administrators and can be modified at any time.

Custom attributes can be supplied by subscribers, or added by campaign managers and used to determine the content and recipients of a given email campaign. This information can then be used for targeted campaigns, using attributes such as location, city of residence, or buying history to determine campaign recipients and content. The application's public interface is available in 35 languages. The documentation detailing the functions and features of the software is available in English and is partially translated into Spanish, French, and Dutch.

History

The first version of phpList was released in April 2000. It is produced and maintained by phpList Ltd., a company registered in the United Kingdom. phpList was initially written and developed by Michiel Dethmers. It was later improved with the contributions of a global community of Open Source software developers, documenters, and translators. On May 26, phpList released its latest version 3.2.5 including new features, bug fixes, and security. [6]

Operating systems supported

The software was developed for Linux, Apache and MySQL, see LAMP but is also compatible with OpenBSD, FreeBSD, OS X, and Windows.

Database connectivity

phpList is designed to connect to a MySQL database. With its support for ADOdb it is possible to extend the connectivity to other databases such as PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, SQLite, Sybase, IBM DB2, and Oracle.
