Prilep, Kosovo

Prilep (Albanian: Prelep; Serbian: Прилеп, Prilep, other names include: Përlep, Prilip, Prejlep, Perlep, Arrnjet, Prejlepi, Arrnjeti) is a village situated in western Kosovo^[a], close to Gjakova. The village has a population of 2,674 according to data from 2002, of which 99.6% are ethnic Albanian.

In the beginning of the 19th century, there were only about 5 to 10 houses, while today there are over 300. During the Kosovo War of 1999 the village was nearly completely destroyed. Albanian and Serbian forces were located in Prilep and fought each other.

^ Kosovo is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Serbia. The Republic of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on 17 February 2008, but Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory. The two governments began to normalise relations in 2013, as part of the Brussels Agreement. Kosovo has received recognition as an independent state from 110 out of 193 United Nations member states.
