Roh Hoe-chan (Korean: 노회찬, born August 31, 1956 in Busan) is a South Korean politician. He has a bachelor's degree in politics from Korea University. He is a member of the 17th, 19th, 20th National Assembly.

Biography

Early years

Roh Hoe-chan was born August 31, 1956 in Busan in middle-class household. He graduated from the Kyunggi High School in 1976. After his military service, He was accepted to Korea University in 1979, where he was politically active. He eventually graduated with bachelor's degree in politics from Korea University.

Political activities

While in the university, he begun working as a labor agitator, which continued throughout 80s and 90s. He was involved with formation of progressive political party and became a founding member of People's Victory 21 in 1997, which late became Democratic Labor Party in 2000.

He was in the Democratic Labor Party and served as a member of the National Assembly from 2004 to 2008. He ran for Mayor of Seoul as a New Progressive Party candidate in 2010. He lost to Grand National Party candidate and incumbent Oh Se-hoon, winning 3.6% of the votes. He again served as member of the National Assembly as member of the Unified Progressive Party and the Justice Party in 2012 to 2013. Roh broke with Unified Progressive Party after allegations that the faction led by the party leader Lee Jung-hee manipulated party list to elect members of her own faction into the National Assembly. He, with Sim Sang-jeong and Rhyu Si-min formed the Justice Party in October 2012.

He lost his seat in 2013. In 2005, he posted the name of the prosecutors implicated in corruption cases involving Samsung on internet. He was charged with breaking communication secrecy act, and after long legal battle, he was sentenced to 4 months in prison and 1 year suspended prison sentence in 2013.[1]

He was elected to the National Assembly as member of the Justice Party in 2016.
