St. Clair County Community College (SC4)[2] is a two-year community college located in Port Huron, Michigan. It serves as the primary center of higher education for the Blue Water Area. SC4 offers Associate degree and certificate programs. It also offers online classes and transfer programs to four-year institutions. In addition, working with University Center Partners, students can earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees without even leaving the SC4 campus.
Classes are held in classrooms on the SC4 campus, and/or taught online. SC4 has Learning Centers in Imlay City, Algonac, Yale, Peck, Bad Axe as well as its main campus in Port Huron. Through these regional centers, SC4 serves a large portion of the Thumb region.
History
St. Clair County Community College began as Port Huron Junior College, which was the Junior College Department of the Port Huron School District. The college was established by act of the Board of Education of the Port Huron School District under Michigan State Law in 1923 and began operation in the same year. It officially became St. Clair County Community College in 1967.
Athletics
The Skippers are affiliated with the National Junior College Athletic Association and play in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. The school currently has a volleyball, baseball, golf, women's basketball, and men's basketball teams. The 2009-2010 men's basketball team succeeded in winning their way to the 'sweet sixteen' of the NCCAA basketball championship tournament.
Honor Society
Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of the two-year college, has repeatedly recognized SC4's own chapter, Lambda Mu as being one of the best in the nation. It won the Chapter of the Year award in 2000, and has won the distinguished chapter award for 14 years consecutively. It also the oldest society of its kind within Michigan, being founded in 1963. Its advisor is Thomas F. Obee, who is also the regional coordinator for the Michigan region of Phi Theta Kappa.
Clubs
Student Government - The Student Government of St. Clair County Community College promotes and sponsors a wide range of activities throughout the academic year and serves as the formal spokesgroup for the student population.
Campus Progressives - To spread the awareness of political issues that will radically change SC4 student lives. To stress the importance of voting and making one's voice heard. Informing and empowering young voters to make a difference.
Computer Information Security Club - The mission of the Computer Information Security Club is to gather likeminded individuals to learn more about how to properly secure different aspects of networks.
Drama Club - The Drama Club brings together students who share a passion for theater and performing arts. The club promotes learning about theater through activities, trips and student-directed productions that enhance the educational goals of the theater discipline's courses and productions.
Engineering Club - Meet fellow engineering students, receive information about Michigan engineering programs and opportunities, network with local professional engineers and collaborate on fun projects.
Environmental Concerns Organization - ECO is for students who are interested in promoting environmental awareness, education, and activism on campus and in our community.
Erie Square Gazette (a student service organization) - The ESG is the on-campus newspaper. The purpose of our newspaper is to inform, entertain, and stimulate thought throughout the student body.Erie Square Gazette Website
Gay-Straight Alliance - The mission of the GSA is to work to provide an open environment for students on campus to meet and support each other and promote understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) issues.
Global Awareness Club - Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, Russia, and Sudan. So many countries in the news as of late. Ever wonder what it's like to live there, or even wonder how you could help these countries? Come to a GAC meeting and explore these and many other issues.
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship - IVCF is a Christ-Centered, nondenominational, student organization.
Nerdcore - students interested in video games, anime, cards and other sub-cultures of nerd lore meet in the cafeteria on a daily basis. This is also the current central hub of the former Magic: The Gathering Club.
Newman Club - Serves the spiritual and social needs of SC4's Catholic students by providing lectures, book discussions, cultural events and trips, and supportive discussions.
Phi Theta Kappa - PTK is the only International Honors Society for the two-year college.
Women's Soccer Club - Playing soccer at SC4 is a club sport. The SC4 Soccer Club's mission is to play soccer at the college level and improve club members' game by playing other colleges.
WSGR Radio 91.3 FM (a student service organization) - The radio station (located in Room 21/22 of the Fine Arts Building) is staffed by student broadcasters and provides training for jobs in the broadcast industry.
Zombie Defense Council - The Zombie Defense Council is an association of students with a common interest in zombies. It is a fun social club that any student can join.
