Sassello is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Savona in the Italian region Liguria, located about 58 kilometres (36 mi) west of Genoa and about 26 kilometres (16 mi) north of Savona in the northern side of the Ligurian Apennines. It is the birthplace of Blessed Chiara Badano.

History

In Pre-historic times it was a settlement of the Statielli, a tribe of the Liguri. It is mentioned for the first time in 967 AD and later it belonged to Bonifacio del Vasto, the del Carretto, Ponzone and Genoese Doria families. Due to its strategical position, it was long contended between the Republic of Genoa and the Marquisate of Montferrat. Genoa acquired it from the Doria in 1612, while in 1672 and 1747 it was occupied by the Duchy of Savoy, until its annexion to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815.

From 1570 to 1670 it was the seat of large ironworks.

In 1997, two years before its introduction to the entire country, Sassello trialled the Euro currency with coins bearing the communal coat of arms.[2]
