Shahrasti (Bengali: শাহরাস্তি) is an upazila of Chandpur District[1] in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Geography

Shahrasti is located at 23°13′20″N 90°57′00″E / 23.2222°N 90.9500°E / 23.2222; 90.9500 . It has 31,212 households and a total area of 154.31 km².

It is the south-easternmost upazilla of Chandpur District that has borders with Comilla, Laxmipur and Noakhali districts.

Demographics

According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Shahrasti had a population of 180,643. Males constituted 48.59% of the population, and females 51.41%. The population aged 18 or over was 84,718. Shahrasti had an average literacy rate of 43% (7+ years), against the national average of 32.4%.[2]

Infrastructure

Shahrasti Upazilla has only one hospital known as "Shahrasti Upazilla Health Complex". The hospital has 50 beds and is operated by government. It has several Family Welfare Centers and Community Clinics at Union level.

Notable residents

Shahrasti Upazilla was founded by Late Husain Ahmed who had served as secretary to the Government of Bangladesh and was also Inspector General of Police. He also developed Shahrasti upazilla: its roads, culverts, electricity, bank, post office, thana and upazilla headquarter building, hospital, madrasah, mosque, etc. were all built and established at his own initiative. There is a road in Shahrasti Upazilla named 'Husain Ahmed Sarak' in recognition of his contribution for the upazilla.

It had some more people that made it famous throughout Bangladesh, such as- Dr. Abdus Satter honorable ex secretary, Major(Rtd.) Mohammed Rafiqul Islam honorable ex home-minister and sector commander of Mukti Bahini in the Bangladesh Liberation War.
