Shayama Chona (Hindi: श्यामा चोना; born 12 August 1942) is the Founder-President of Tamana Association (estb. 1984) [1]and the former Principal of dps rkp, New Delhi.[2] In 1997, she was presented with the prestigious National Award for Individual for Best Work Done in The Cause of the Disabled. Under her dynamic leadership as President of the Governing Council, Tamana Association received the First Mother Teresa Award for its dedicated services to the intellectually impaired. [3][4]
Not only has her contribution been recognized and felicitated time and again, her commitment in the field of education and social welfare for over 4 decades has given concrete shape directly to the nation’s education policies and welfare programmes.
She is the proud recipient of 54 awards, the most prestigious being the Padma Bhushan in 2008 and Padma Shri[5] in 1999 and two National Awards in 1994 and 1997 and one State Award in 1993 for her work in the field of education and social welfare.
She has served as a member on 97 Advisory Boards and Committees and has been Trustee of the Nehru Bal Samiti and Special Olympics, Patron of ‘Concerned Action Now’, Vice-Chairman of the Society for Human Development, besides being on the Managing Committee of 46 schools and other educational institutions.
Personal Life
Tamana Association was conceived on the basis of the name, "Tamana", the autistic daughter of Shayama Chona, who was born with cerebral palsy. She was a victimized and traumatized child, led by her mother from the vicissitudes of despair to hope, which she materialized into a special school which would cater to many such children born with such impairments, deficiencies and abnormalities. The first centre, Tamana Special School was inaugurated by Her Royal Highness, Diana, Princess of Wales, on 12 February 1992. [6]
