Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina[1] is the third season of the South African reality game show Survivor South Africa. The season was filmed in late 2009 and aired weekly between January and April 2010 on Wednesdays nights on M-Net with the ninety-minute live season finale airing on the 21, April 2010. M-Net also commissioned a 15th episode that had a look at the whole series with retrospective views from all the contestants. Hosted by Nico Panagio (replacing previous host Mark Bayly), the program featured 18 celebrity castaways competing for 27 days. The grand prize was a R500,000 donation to the winner's chosen charity and an additional R500,000 for the winner.
The season was filmed on the small island of Santa Carolina, a member of the Bazaruto Archipelago off the southern coast of Mozambique. The castaways lived amongst white sand beaches, coral reefs and buildings left abandoned by the Mozambican Civil War, including a prison and a luxury hotel.
This season also introduced Exile Island, Tribal Kidnapping and the Hidden Immunity Idol twists, which were imported from the American edition of the show. The Hidden Immunity Idol twist was much like the first iteration of the twist (as seen in Survivor: Guatemala) in which the idol had to be played prior to the voting process.
On Day 1, the 18 contestants faced a schoolyard pick by Craig and Kaseran, who were chosen initially exiled in a twist. The two original tribes were named Chibudu and Timbila, after local Chopi words for "harmony" and "togetherness". On Day 13, one member of each tribe was swapped to the other tribe. On Day 15, the 10 remaining contestants merged into the Kululama (meaning "strength"). The eight players voted out of the Kululama tribe formed Tribal Council Jury who along with the South African public (who held the 9th jury vote) ultimately decided who of the Final 2 should be the "Ultimate Survivor".
On 21 April, in was revealed that exotic dancer and club owner Perle "GiGi" van Schalkwyk was crowned the Ultimate Survivor in a 6-3 decision over television presenter Ashley Hayden, winning R500,000 for herself and another R500,000 for her charity, a Hospice in Johannesburg.

^1 : This challenge was a combined reward and immunity.
^2 : Before the tribes were picked, Craig and Kaseran were chosen to not make the journey to the island with the other contestants. Instead, they were flown to the island and isolated on a beach where they received a clue to a hidden immunity idol and were tasked with picking tribes on day 2.
^3 : After the reward challenge, a contestant from the losing tribe was chosen by the winning tribe to go to Exile Island, where they received a clue to a hidden immunity idol. The exilee also chose someone to be kidnapped from the winning tribe to replace them at their camp until the next immunity challenge.
^4 : This reward challenge was a duel between Izak and Okkert in which they alone represented their tribes and no one else participated.
^5 : Darren played the hidden immunity idol at Timbila's tribal council, and therefore was immune from the vote.
^6 : After the reward challenge, each tribe selected an ambassador to go the other camp, take one item, and steal one castaway permanently onto their own tribe. The two contestants selected to switch tribes were given immunity for this round only.
^7 : At the merge, the tribe was asked to rank each other based on their strength in the game. Since ProVerb was considered the weakest by the others, he was exiled at camp while the rest of the tribe partook in a merge feast. At camp, he received a clue to a hidden immunity idol.
^8 : After the merge, kidnapping was no longer possible as there was only one tribe.
^9 : As the winner of the challenge Sade could invite anyone to join her, she chose Ashley. As the looser of the challenge Gys could choose anyone (other then himself) to join the Sade and Ashley on reward, he chose Gigi.
^10 : The Final Tribal Council aired at the end of Episode 13 but the results were only revealed in the following episode at a live finale & reunion.

^11 : Christina voluntarily left the game before tribal council on Day 3 due to homesickness.
^12 : Jub Jub voluntarily left the game before the immunity challenge on Day 6, claiming he needed to seek outside medical attention for his infected penis.
^13 : The Tribal Council ended in a tie and since neither Hanna and Louw had previous votes from the Kululama tribe (as this was said tribe's first tribal council), they participated in a timing tiebreaker challenge. Hanna lost and was therefore eliminated.
^14 : The Tribal Council ended in a tie. As per the rules a Tribal Council countback was called and the votes of the Kululama tribe was accounted for. Louw was eliminated due to having five previous votes to Okkert's zero.
^15 : : The Tribal Council ended in a tie. As per the rules a Tribal Council countback was called and the votes of the Kululama tribe was accounted for. Okkert was eliminated due to having four previous votes to ProVerb's zero.
^16 : : The Tribal Council ended in a 3-way tie. As per the rules a Tribal Council countback was called and the votes of the Kululama tribe was accounted for.Izak was eliminated due to having one previous vote to GiGi and Sade's zero.
^17 : The South African public was given the chance to vote for a finalist to win the game by means of internet and/or text message voting. Ashley received the most votes, giving her one jury vote.
