Talgo Avril is a high-speed train that Talgo is developing. It stands for "Alta Velocidad Rueda Independiente Ligero" (roughly translated as "Light High-Speed Independent Wheel").[1]
Details
The train is intended to have a top speed of 380 km/h (236 mph).[1] It will have front and rear power cars containing under-floor traction equipment, and 12 trailer cars in between the power cars, giving a total seating capacity comparable to those of an Electric Multiple Unit rather than a locomotive-hauled train.[1] The trailer cars will have an unusually short length of 13 m (42 ft 8 in).
Other details:[2]
- There will be a version with a width of 2.9 m (9 ft 6 in) (Series 8 based) and an extra-large version 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) (Series 9 based) enabling a 2+3 seating configuration in standard class rows and a capacity of up to 600 seats in a 200 m (656 ft 2 in) trainset.[2]
- Versions for fixed gauge (1,435 mm, 1,520 mm or 1,668 mm) and variable gauge are foreseen.
- Traction system designed for 4 voltages (25 kV/50 Hz; 15 kV/16.7 Hz; 3kV DC; 1.5 kV DC)
1st-batch series
The first-batch series will be operate between Madrid and northwestern Spain. due to different track gauge and different platform height (1435mm track gauge for Madrid and 1668mm track gauge for northwest, and 760mm platforms for Madrid and 550mm platforms for northwest), despite electrifications are both 25kV AC, and Talgo 350 trainsets have narrow bodyshell and only work on the 1435mm track gauge. This series has 1435mm-1668mm variable gauge and 2.9m bodyshell for power cars and 3.2m bodyshell for passenger cars.
2nd-batch series
The second-batch series will be a bodyshell width of 3.2m for both power cars and passenger cars, and track gauge will be 1520mm fixed gauge and 1520mm-1676mm variable gauge. This series will also have 760mm train floor, but have retractable steps for 200mm and 550mm platforms. This series will run in Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan and India. (the latter 2 will have 1520-1676 variable gauge only)
Avril, a concept
Talgo presented the Avril concept at the InnoTrans fair in Berlin in September 2010. Talgo has provided additional information to the end of 2010.[3]
Prototype
Talgo began the trials of the prototype in the first half of 2012.
