Dr. Tanveer Abbasi (original name Noor Nabi Abbasi) (Sindhi: ڊاڪٽر تنوير عباسي‎) was born on 7 December 1934 in a small town Sobhodero District Khairpur, Sindh.[1] He was a poet, researcher, critic of Sindhi Literature and general physician.[2] He set new trends in poetry and gave the progressive lead to younger writers and poets. His influence of Sindhi literature is described as formative.[3] His work has played an important role. His poetical work distinguished him from other poets of his time. His association with the Bazim-i- Sufia Sindh, Bazim-i-Khalil, Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Sindh Forum Sachal Sarmast Yadgari Committee, the Poetry Society of London, the Sachal Chair, Pakistan Writers Guild, Shah Abdul Latif University and many other organizations heightened their stature and resulted in their improvement.[4] He died on 25 November 1999 in Islamabad where he was buried.

Education

Dr. Tanveer Abbsi got primary education Sadhu Heeranand Academy, Karachi and matriculation from N. G. V. High School Karachi. He had done intermediate from D. G. Sindh Government College and then he got MBBS from Liaqat Medical College, Jamshoro, Sindh.

Literary career

His influence of Sindhi literature is described as formative. His work has played an important role. His poetical work distinguished him from other poets of his time. The lyricism of his verse finds strength in the use of similes that he draws from real life which immediately captures his audience who respond as the images are transmitted through recognition and association. It is the nobility of thought and the purity of passion that informs his verse. His verse is a dialogue with the human soul, an active conversation that engages and enables the mind and liberates the creative energies. Dr. Abbasi’s influence on the poets and writers of his day and the coming generation will continue to give a positive direction to their creative work. Dr. Abbasi was a dynamic person who remained active on many fronts simultaneously. His association with the Bazim-i- Sufia Sindh, Bazim-i-Khalil, Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Sindh Forum Sachal Sarmast Yadgari Committee, the Poetry Society of London, the Sachal Chair, Pakistan Writers Guild, Shah Abdul Latif University and many other organizations heightened their stature and resulted in their improvement. Dr Tanveer was a very loving and generous person and his progressive thoughts were very popular among the new generation. Dr. Tanveer had a charming personality and he traveled to remote parts of Sindh to collect the poetry of various mystic poets including Sachal Sarmast, Saami and Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. The strength of Tanveer’s poetry lay in the true path of life he advocated. Tanveer’s poetry was a message for promotion of peace, beauty and love. It was a true reflection of his age that provided the basic guiding principles for the coming generation. Dr. Tanveer Abbasi was a recipient of many national awards among them the writers Guild award Institute of Sindhology award, Sachal Sarmast award, Sindh Graduates Association gold medal, Latif Academy medal Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Narain Shiyam award India, Sindhi Adabi Sangat award, Shah Abdul Latif excellence award and Pride of Performance.

Recognition

Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur has established Dr. Tanveer Abbasi Chair where his work and literary research is compiled and students of Sindhi Literature obtain research and study on his work.[5]

Death

He died in Islamabad in hospital on November 25, 1999. He willed to his sons that after death his body would donate to the medical students for experiments, but after demands his eyes were given to a needy person.
