Tino-Sven Sušić (born 13 February 1992) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Belgian club Genk and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Early life
Born in Sarajevo, Sušić emigrated with his family early in his life to Belgium. He started training with the second-tier Visé, before moving to the youth side of Genk. At the age of 16, he moved to Standard Liège. In August 2010, he was called up to the Belgium under-19 side, featuring in two matches as a substitute, playing a friendly match for the Standard Liège first team as well. Not breaking through, he continued playing for the team's youth sides.[2]
Club career
Hajduk Split
In June 2012 he joined Croatian side Hajduk Split on a four-year contract.[3] In the beginning he had problems adapting to the right wing role that Mišo Krstičević assigned him to. In November 2012 he scored his first goal for Hajduk in a cup game against RNK Split. Later in the spring part of the Prva HNL coach Mišo started using him as a defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder where he proved to be much better and quickly became an important first team player.
In April 2013 manager Igor Tudor took over Hajduk and he used Sušić mostly as a defensive midfielder where he proved to be the best. In the 2013 Croatian Cup Final Sušić proved to be amongst the best Hajduk players. He was the player of the match in the second game against NK Lokomotiva where he scored an impressive goal and later won that cup which was his first trophy in his career.
At the beginning of the 2013–14 Prva HNL because of some injuries he played a right wing role. Later in the derby against Dinamo Zagreb which Hajduk won by 2–0 he returned to his defensive midfielder role and was one of the key players of the match. The season was very successful for Tino - he made a career-high 39 appearances in all competitions scoring three goals and assisting five more.
In the 2014–15 season, Sušić continued to be a key player for Hajduk. He scored and assisted in Hajduk's 3rd round 2nd leg Europa League qualifier against Shakhter Karagandy, where Hajduk overturned a 4–2 loss in the first leg with a 3–0 win in the second. He scored again in the final qualifying stage, but Hajduk ultimately lost 2–1 on aggregate to Dnipro. In the league, he played mostly as an attacking midfielder, scoring three goals and assisting seven in 26 appearances.[4] In February 2015, he signed a new contract with Hajduk, until 2018.[5]
In the 2015–16 Croatian First Football League, Sušić proved his quality. After a slow start in the season when coach Damir Burić didn't use him much, he started delivering on the field and alongside Nikola Vlašić he proved to be the amongst the best Hajduk players in the season. Until November 2015, Hajduk was the leading club in the league but after a home defeat against NK Rijeka and away defeat against NK Osijek, they started to fall in form. Sušić was the most consistent player that season and on 24 April 2016, he played his 100 official league match for Hajduk in a home match against NK Rijeka where he also scored in a 1-2 defeat. On 10 April 2016, he was made captain for the first time in his career in a 3-0 win against NK Istra 1961 where he scored 2 goals from a penalty. Sušić scored 12 goals in the season which is his career record and more than in his 3 previous seasons combined. He also won the Sportske novosti Yellow Shirt award for the 2015-16 season.[7]
In his four and a half years with Hajduk Split, Sušić made 142 appearances, scoring 30 goals and making 26 assists.[8]
Genk
On 29 August 2016, he rejoined his once youth club Genk in a transfer deal worth €2 million.[9]
International career
Tino was eligible to play for Belgium, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In October 2013, Tino confirmed that he will only play for Bosnia and Herzegovina.[10]
On 5 March 2014 he played his first match for the national team in a friendly match versus Egypt at Tivoli-Neu in Innsbruck.[11]
He was part of 23-men squad for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.[12]
Personal life
Tino-Sven is the son of the former Yugoslavia international Sead Sušić and the nephew of Safet Sušić.
