The 2016–17 season is AFC Wimbledon's 15th season in the club's history and The Dons 1st season in League One following their promotion via the 2016 Football League play-offs.[1]

FA Cup

On 17 October 2016, the draw for the FA Cup First round proper took place. The competition progresses in knock-out stages, culminating in a Final to be played at Wembley Stadium on 27 May 2017.[2]

First Round

At this stage, there were 80 clubs remaining in the competition (32 non-league teams progressing from the qualifying rounds and the 48 clubs from League One and League Two). AFC Wimbledon were drawn against fellow League One side Bury.

Second Round

On 7 November 2016, the draw for the FA Cup Second round took place. At this stage, there were 40 clubs remaining in the competition (17 League One sides, 11 League Two sides and 12 non-league sides). AFC Wimbledon were drawn against National League North side Curzon Ashton.

Third Round

On 5 December 2016, the draw for the FA Cup Third round took place. At this stage, there were 64 clubs remaining in the competition (20 Premier League sides, 24 Championship sides, TBC League One sides, TBC League Two sides and TBC non-league sides).

Football League Cup

On 22 June 2016, the draw for the Football League Cup took place. The draw is seeded and regionalised on a north/south basis. Seedings are based on the league finishing positions for clubs in the previous season. The competition progresses in knock-out stages, culminating in a Final to be played at Wembley Stadium on 26 February 2017.[3]

First Round

The First Round of the competition includes 70 of the 72 Football League clubs: 24 from League Two, 24 from League One, and 22 from the Championship. AFC Wimbledon were eliminated in the first round of the competition after substitute Tom Nichols scored a winning goal for Peterborough United in stoppage time.

Football League Trophy

On 27 June 2016, the draw was made for the Group stages of the newly structured Football League Trophy. The first round will now consist of 64 clubs (24 from League One, 24 from League Two and 16 Category 1 Academy Teams) split into 16 groups of 4 teams, regionalised on a north/south basis, with each group including one Academy Team. Each club will play each other once, either home or away, with the top 2 teams from each group progressing to the knock-out stages, culminating in a Final to be played at Wembley Stadium on 2 April 2017.[4]

Second Round (Southern Section)

The draw for the Second Round took place on 10 November, with 32 clubs (13 from League One, 11 from League Two and 8 Category 1 Academy sides) progressing from the previous round, continuing to be regionalised on a north/south basis, with each group winner from the previous round being drawn at home to a second placed team from a different qualifying group.

FA Youth Cup

The draw for the First Round proper of the 65th FA Youth Cup took place on 21 October 2016. This round consisted of 80 clubs in total (24 League One clubs, 24 League Two clubs and the remaining 32 clubs from non-league who progressed through the Qualifying Rounds. Broxbourne Borough and Metropolitan Police were both granted a Bye into the Second Round. Only those players between the age of 15 and 18 on 31 August of the current season are eligible to take part.

First Round

Second Round

The draw for the Second Round took place on 4 November 2016. This round consisted of 42 clubs in total (16 League One clubs, 12 League Two clubs and the remaining 14 clubs from non-league who progressed through the Qualifying Rounds).

Third Round

The draw for the Second Round took place on 11 November 2016. This round consisted of 64 clubs in total (20 Premier League clubs, 24 Championship club, 7 League One clubs, 9 League Two clubs and the remaining 4 clubs from non-league who progressed through the Qualifying Rounds).

Premier League Cup

The Premier League Cup is an annual competition contested by under-23s sides (though teams are allowed to field up to three overage outfield players) from clubs with Category 1, Category 2 and Category 3 status as determined by the Elite Player Performance Plan. This season constituted the 4th year of the competition's existence.

First Qualifying Round

The 6 Category 3 sides which entered the competition this year were required to play each other in a first qualifying knock-out round. AFC Wimbledon, Burnley and Portsmouth all progressed to the second qualifying knock-out round in which they were joined by Barnsley and Watford, the two lowest finishing Category 2 teams of the 2015–16 Professional U21 Development League.

Round of 32 (Group F)

AFC Wimbledon were granted a Bye into the Group knock-out stage (19 Category 1 sides, 12 Category 2 sides and 3 Category 3 sides). 8 groups consisting of 4 teams will play each other twice, both home and away, with the top 2 teams from each group progressing to the knock-out stages.
