List of Iraqi football champions
The Iraqi football champions are the winners of the highest league in Iraqi football, which since the 2003–04 season has been called the Iraqi Premier League.
Following the establishment of the Iraq Football Association in 1948, the Iraq FA Championship was played in the 1948–49 season and was won by Sharikat Naft Al-Basra. The Iraq FA Cup Championship was established in 1956 which was a knockout competition with different divisions; despite being a knockout competition, it was considered as the national championship. In 1961, a proper league was established for clubs and football teams owned by the institutes in Baghdad, but despite being a league, it retained the name of Iraq FA Cup Championship until 1963 when it became the Iraq FA League Championship.[1] In the 1973–74 season, teams from all around Iraq were allowed to compete in the competition, rather than just Baghdad-based teams.[2]
The first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq was established in 1974, by the name of the Iraqi National League, with many of the institutes teams merging together to form sports clubs. The first season saw Al-Tayaran achieving the league.[3][4] The first team to get relegated was Al-Rafidain, and the first ever promoted teams consisted of five clubs including Al-Zawra'a who succeeded in achieving the league title in their first season participating.[5]
The four "Popular Teams" of Baghdad (Al-Zawra'a, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Shorta and Al-Talaba), have dominated the now-called Iraqi Premier League over the years, achieving 28 titles out of a possible 40 since the 1974–75 season. Two of these teams appeared in the 1973–74 season, with those two being Al-Tayaran (Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya) and Al-Shorta (who were represented by two teams, Aliyat Al-Shorta and Shorta Al-Najda, who later merged with other Police teams to form Al-Shorta prior to the 1974–75 season). Al-Zawra'a and Al-Talaba (known as Al-Jameea at the time) made their first appearance in the Iraqi National League in 1975–76.[3][5]
Eight of the clubs which have been crowned champions of Iraq are currently competing in the Iraqi Premier League, while four of them are competing in the lower divisions and two of them have since dissolved. Al-Zawra'a have won 13 titles, the most of any club.[6] Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and Al-Shorta are in joint-second with ten national titles overall, and Al-Talaba and Amanat Baghdad share third place having both won five national titles. Erbil, the only club outside of Baghdad to achieve more than one title, have won four titles.
