2016 Iraqi Super Cup

Iraqi Super Cup (previously known as Al-Muthabara Cup) is an Iraqi football cup contested by Iraqi club teams. It is contested by the winners of the previous season's Iraqi Premier League and Iraq FA Cup tournaments, and has been played at the start of the new season since 1999 (prior to that, it was played at the end of the previous season). If the same club wins both competitions, it is competed by the winners and the runners-up of the Iraqi Premier League. In fact, this has surprisingly been the case for most of the editions of the competition.[1] The first edition was held in 1997, and the tournament was stopped in 2002, however it has been resurrected for 2016 and will be played on 22 August 2016.

Before 1997, there was another competition called the Al-Muthabara Cup, and it was originally called the Al-Athar Cup. This cup was played between the winners and the runners-up of the league in the previous season and was different to this Al-Muthabara Cup. That competition was won by the likes of Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya (1962 and 1964), Al-Jaish (1966) and Al-Rasheed (1986).
