Kalyanasundaram Anbazhagan (Tamil: கல்யாணசுந்தரம் அன்பழகன்) is the former finance minister of Tamil Nadu. He was re-elected as the General Secretary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nine times in a row. He has been elected as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly nine times.

Early life

He was born in Kattoor near Thiruvarur in Tanjore district (now Thiruvarur District) of Madras Presidency, British India on 19 December 1922, as Ramaiah to M. Kalyanasundaranar and Swarnambal in a Hindu Mudaliar family. He had finished his schooling in the Municipal High School, Mayiladuthurai. Political career

He was a member of the Tamil Nadu legislative council between 1962-1967 and a close confidant of the DMK founder C.N. Annadurai. He is called perasiriyar (professor), as a term of endearment. He was a member of Lok Sabha between 1967-1971. In 1971 he served as Social Welfare minister of Tamil Nadu. He had given up his M.L.A position, representing Park Town constituency, in the year 1984 putting forward the Tamil Eelam issue. He has been serving as a General secretary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from 1977. He is a close aide of DMK president Karunanidhi and his family.

Personal life

K. Anbazhagan lived with wife Santhakumari in Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar, Chennai. She died on 23 December 2012 at the age of 90 due to Diabetes mellitus.[2]
