Chak Bankola is a census town under Andal police station[1] of Durgapur subdivision in Barddhaman district in the state of West Bengal, India.

Geography

Chak Bankola is located at 23°39′48″N 87°14′26″E / 23.663236°N 87.240606°E / 23.663236; 87.240606.

The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating latterite soil. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared.[2]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Chak Bankola had a population of 10,318. Males constitute 57% of the population and females 43%. Chak Bankola has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 62% and female literacy of 46%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

It is in the heart of the coal mining zone.[4] It also has engineering workshops.[5]

Education

Chak Bankola has one primary school.[6]
