Corrigan is a town in Polk County, Texas in the United States of America. The town was named for Pat Corrigan, a train conductor.[3] The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census.

Geography

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,721 people, 630 households, and 437 families residing in the town. The population density was 934.9 people per square mile (361.1/km²). There were 734 housing units at an average density of 398.7 per square mile (154.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 48.11% White, 42.18% African American, 0.23% Native American, 8.83% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.93% of the population.

Households

There were 630 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 24.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the town the population was spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.7 males.

Income

The median income for a household in the town was $18,980, and the median income for a family was $24,830. Males had a median income of $30,144 versus $19,881 for females. The per capita income for the town was $10,794. About 30.3% of families and 31.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 42.1% of those under age 18 and 30.8% of those age 65 or over.

The Town of Corrigan is served by the Corrigan-Camden Independent School District.

Climate

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Corrigan has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[7]
