Daniel "Dan" Potts (born 13 April 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays as a full-back for League Two club Luton Town. He played for the United States U20 team and the England U18, U19 and U20 teams.

Club career

West Ham United

Born in Barking, Greater London,[1] Potts joined West Ham United aged nine and signed as a scholar in May 2010.[3] He made his reserve team debut away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27 April 2011,[4] and his senior debut at home on 17 December 2011, in a 1–0 victory over Barnsley,[5] just a day after signing a professional contract with the club.[6] He received the Young Hammer of the Year award in May 2012 after making four appearances in the 2011–12 season during which West Ham were promoted back to the Premier League after a 2–1 win over Blackpool in the 2012 Football League Championship play-off Final at Wembley Stadium.[7][8]

On 22 November 2012, Potts joined League One club Colchester United on loan until 22 December 2012.[9] On the following day, he made his debut for the club in a 5–1 away defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.[10] His loan was extended on 21 December 2012 for a further month.[11]

On 3 January 2013, Potts was recalled from his loan by West Ham.[12] Two days later, he made a starting appearance in a 2–2 draw with Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.[13] Potts made his full Premier League debut in a 3–0 away defeat to Sunderland on 12 January 2013, during which he made an error that led to the second goal.[14] In the FA Cup third-round replay, he once again made a starting appearance as West Ham were knocked out of the competition, after they suffered a 1–0 away defeat.[15] Potts came on as a 62nd-minute substitute for Jack Collison in a 5–1 away defeat to Arsenal on 23 January 2013, but later sustained concussion in the 82nd-minute, after a clash of heads with Bacary Sagna.[16][17] He was released from hospital the next day,[18] but didn't make any further appearances during the season.[19]

On 20 November 2013, Potts joined League Two club Portsmouth on a month-long loan.[20] He made his debut in a 2–1 defeat at Fratton Park against Scunthorpe United.[21] He returned to West Ham in December 2013 after making five appearances for Portsmouth.[22]

During the 2014–15 season, Potts made one appearance for West Ham in a 1–1 draw with Sheffield United on 27 August 2014 in the League Cup second round, eventually losing 5–4 on penalties after a penalty shootout.[23][24] He was released by West Ham at the end of the season after 12 years with the club.[25]

Luton Town

Potts signed a two-year contract with League Two club Luton Town one day after his release by West Ham.[26] Initially, he only played in cup competitions, hence making his Luton debut in a 3–1 home win over newly promoted Championship club Bristol City in the League Cup first round on 11 August 2015.[27] Potts' next appearance came almost two months later in a 2–1 away defeat to League One club Gillingham in the Football League Trophy second round on 6 October 2015.[28] He made four league appearances during the month of October, taking the place of Scott Griffiths who was spending more time with his wife after complications during the birth of their son.[29] During this time, Potts made his first league appearance for Luton in a 1–1 draw with York City on 10 October 2015.[30] However, an injury in the 28th-minute of a 2–1 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle on 24 October 2015 meant he had to be replaced by Alex Lawless.[31] This proved to be the end of his run in the first-team, as he was dropped to the bench for a 2–0 away win over Dagenham & Redbridge one week later.[32] Potts was made to wait for his next opportunity in the first-team, until an injury to Jake Howells meant he was given his first starting appearance since October under recently appointed manager Nathan Jones in a 1–0 away win over Leyton Orient on 5 March 2016.[33][34] He was becoming a regular first-team player, until suffering a 68th-minute injury in a 1–0 away win over Plymouth Argyle on 19 March 2016 and was replaced by Magnus Okuonghae.[35] Potts returned to the starting lineup three weeks later in a 2–0 home defeat to Accrington Stanley.[36] He retained his place in the first-team for the remainder of the season, making a further six league appearances and completing the 2015–16 season with a total of 16 appearances in all competitions.[37]

International career

As his father was born in the United States, Potts was presumed eligible to play for both the England national football team and the United States men's national soccer team. Potts was invited and took part in a United States under-20 camp in 2011.[38] He made his debut for the United States under-20 team as a substitute, playing 21 minutes in a 2–1 defeat to France in a friendly in Vichy.[39][40] However, in April 2012, U.S. Soccer officials determined that Potts was not eligible for U.S. citizenship, as his father did not meet residency requirements to pass along citizenship to his son, meaning he could no longer play for the United States at any level.[41]

Potts played the first half for the England national under-18 team in 3–0 win over Poland U18 at Crewe's Alexandra Stadium on 7 March 2012.[42] Later that year, he progressed to the England national under-19 team, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 win over Finland U19 in a friendly on 13 November 2012.[43] On 21 March 2013, Potts played another full 90 minutes in a 1–0 win over Turkey U19.[44]

On 28 May 2013, he was named in manager Peter Taylor's 21-man squad for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[45] Potts made his England national under-20 team debut on 16 June 2013 as a 45th-minute substitute in a 3–0 win over Uruguay U20 in a warm-up game.[46] He played the full 90 minutes of England's first Group E match, a 2–2 draw with Iraq U20 on 23 June 2013.[47] Three days later, Potts conceded a penalty as England drew 1–1 with Chile U20.[48] After receiving a yellow card in the first two group matches,[49][50] Potts was suspended from the final group match against Egypt U20, which England lost 2–0,[51] thus they were eliminated from the competition after failing to win a match.[52]

Personal life

Potts is the son of former West Ham United captain Steve Potts and attended Marshalls Park School in Romford.[53] At 12-years-old, Potts was diagnosed with leukaemia.[54] However, just before his 16th birthday he was given the all clear.[54]
