The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (Hindi: भारतीय प्रबंध संस्थान, उदयपुर), also known as IIMU, is a graduate business school in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. Established as an autonomous body in 2011,[1] the institute offers the two-year postgraduate programme (PGP), one year postgraduate programme (PGPX) and other management development programmes.[2] It is one of the seven Indian Institutes of Management set up by the central government during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.[3][4][5] IIM Udaipur was ranked as the fifth best management institute in the country by the Government of India (Ministry of Human Resource Development) National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2016.[6]

The institute is set in the picturesque backdrop of Udaipur, one of the busiest tourist attractions in India.[7]

History

IIMs play a leading role in the nation’s managerial manpower development in addition to carrying out research in emerging areas. As role models for other Indian B-Schools, they share knowledge and skills with these institutions to improve their quality in management education.

In 2009, the Indian government decided to start seven new IIMs including IIM Udaipur. IIM U started its PGP programme with 57 students in a temporary campus located at Polymer Science Building, Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU), Udaipur. It also started its PGPX programme with 16 students.[4][5]

Mr. Pankaj Patel, the Chairman Managing Director of Zydus Cadila, was appointed the Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIMU in January 2016. Mr. Patel is the successor to Mr. C. K . Birla, Chairman of Hindustan Motors and former chairman of IIMU.[8] Prof. Janat Shah, an IIM Ahmedabad Alumnus, formerly with IIM Bangalore, was appointed as the Institute’s Director in 2011.[1]

IIM Udaipur was inaugurated on 30 July 2011 by C. P. Joshi, Minister of Road Transport and Highways.[1]

Campus

IIM Udaipur became operational from 2011 in a temporary campus located at Polymer Science Building, Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU), Udaipur, Rajasthan. Construction has started at the 253 acres (102 ha) of land in the Balicha area of Udaipur, Rajasthan, which have been allocated by the Government of Rajasthan for the institute's new Campus.[9][10] Honourable Union Minister for HRD, Smriti Irani has inaugurated the campus.[10] The construction of the new campus would be completed in two phases. The institute will start functioning from the new campus post completion of first phase in April 2016.[11]

Academic programs

Similar to the other IIMs, IIM Udaipur offers diplomas in management and not degrees. It offers the following full-time academic programmes:[2]

Postgraduate programme in Management (PGP)

The Postgraduate programme in Management (PGP) is a two-year, regular, full-time residential programme. This is similar to PGP offered by other IIMs. It is the flagship programme of IIM Udaipur. Admission to the PGP course of IIM Udaipur is competitive and is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted each year. The PGP course consists of six trimesters covered over two years. The first year consists of three trimesters covering foundation courses of different business functions. Second year consists of elective courses and has three trimesters. IIM Udaipur offers an elective in the second year "International business and practices" where students get a chance to work on a live project outside India.

The coursework also requires the completion of an internship between the two years lasting for a total of eight weeks. The admissions for the first batch of students for 72 seats was completed through its mentor institute IIM Indore. Third batch of the program was convocated in March 2015.

Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX)

The Postgraduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is an intensive one-year regular full-time residential programme for aspirants with work experience. It is similar to 1 year MBA programmes offered by other IIMs, ISB, XLRI and other renowned MBA colleges. It is not an executive or part-time MBA. Admission to the course is competitive and is through the GMAT. The PGPX provides students with the same solid foundation in key management concepts and disciplines as a two-year MBA, with similar rigor and grading criteria. A key advantage of the PGPX is that the course work builds on the work experience of the students.

The students spend the fall module in Purdue University, USA for their international immersion segment. Purdue University, founded in 1869, is a highly ranked public university in US. Since its inception, the Krannert School of Management has been recognized as one of the top business schools in the country — its overall master program is ranked #16 worldwide in Business Insider’s Spring 2010 report. In the 2013 U.S. News & World Report ranking, Purdue is ranked #7 in Operations and Production and #9 in Supply Chain Management/Logistics. The coursework also requires the completion of an internship lasting for a total of eight weeks. The students are awarded with both the PGPX Diploma from IIM Udaipur and a MS degree from Purdue. The 15 month dual degree program between Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur and Purdue University is designed to cater to the present industry requirements and equips students to deal with complex supply chains. The admissions for the first batch of students for 16 seats are completed. Second batch of the program convocated this year in March 2015.
