Kadambur is a panchayat town in Kovilpatti taluk of the Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temples in and around Kadambur portray the authentic Chola art and architecture.

Geography

Kadambur is located at 8°59′N 77°52′E / 8.98°N 77.87°E / 8.98; 77.87.[1] It has an average elevation of 84 metres (275 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Kadambur had a population of 4379. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Kadambur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 61%. In Kadambur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.And kadambur is famous for boli a unique sweet snack, major fertilizer and cotton industry are situated in kadambur.

There is also a Kadambur hills near Sathyamangalam, Erode district and also one in Cuddalore dist called melakadambur mentioned in Devaram and has a rare piece of master architecture temple known as Karakoil. Nearby villages include Kalugasalapuram, Chockalingapuram, Onamaakulam, Kallathikinaru, Malaipatti,Parivillikottai and Kollankinar.

R. Janarthanan hailed from Kadambur (Born October 22, 1929) is a former union minister of India and a leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He was union Minister of State, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions with additional Charge of minister of State for Finance (Revenue, Banking and Insurance). He held these portfolios in Second Vajpayee Ministry from 1998 to 1999. The current MLA (Kadambur Raju) of the Kovilpatti constituency also hails from Kadambur.
