Koppa (Kannada: ಕೊಪ್ಪ) is a panchayat town in Chikkamagaluru district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town is renowned as Kashmir of Karnataka for its famous arecanut, coffee and tea estates. Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee are grown here. Koppa extends over 22 Gram Panchayats, one Town Panchayat and 3 Hobilis. Megunda Hobili, in particular, is famous for Coffee. A number of tea processing centres - in Bappunji (Devon Plantation and Industries Ltd), Karkikonda, Koradihitlu, Alageshwara, Balanur have made this taluk famous for Tea. Bhandigadi is famous for arecanut and paddy cultivation and also for shakatapuram shree mutt.

Geography

Koppa is located at 12°33′N 75°21′E / 12.55°N 75.35°E / 12.55; 75.35.[1] It has an average elevation of 763 metres (2,503 feet). Koppa, situated at a distance of 32KM from Agumbe has a good rainy season starting from June and continuing till October. Coffee and Tea plantations attract a large number of tourists to enjoy the great climate & scenic beauty. Home-stays inside these estates have become must visit places.

Education

According to the recent survey conducted by an authorized department Chickamagalur stands first in the quality of School education in the state. Being an integral part of the district, Koppa contributes significantly in the field of education. It is the hub of many institutions too. Govt. First Grade College, Sri Venkateshwara Vidya Mandira (S.V.V.M), Sri Sharadha Vidya Mandira (S.S.V.M), S.S.V.N, G.J.C, St Joseph's, St.Norbert's, Nachiketha and A.L.N Rao ayurvedic college are particularly well-respected. The education is available both in Kannada as well as English medium. Here are the extraordinary talents who have represented Koppa in state, national as well as in global level. Former Education Minister of Karnataka, Late Mr HG Govinde Gowda, famously known as 'Malnad gandhi' was from Koppa.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Koppa had a population of 19,226. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Koppa has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 79%. In Koppa, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
