Lodhran District (Urdu: ضِلع لودهراں), is a district in the Punjab, Pakistan - the city of Lodhran is the capital of the district. It is located on the northern side of River Sutlej. It is bounded to the north by the districts of Multan, Khanewal and Vehari, to the south by Bahawalpur, to the east lie the districts of Vehari and Bahawalpur; while district Multan lies on the western side. It has the lowest Human Development Index of all districts in Punjab. The district was created in 1991 and is a well-known cotton-growing area.[1]

Lodhran District is spread over an area of 1,790 square kilometres and is subdivided into three tehsils (Lodhran, Kahror Pakka and Dunyapur) which contain a total of 73 Union Councils:[2]

Education

Lodhran has a total of 828 government schools out of which 59 percent (487 schools) are for girl students. The district has an enrolment of 146,345 in public sector schools.[3]


LODHRAN UNIVERSITY MOVEMENT (LUM)

In year 2014, a movement was started by Professor Dr Muhammad Ashraf Malik with demand to provide access to higher education to the people of district Lodhran, Punjab, Pakistan. Dr. Ashraf Malik, Founder of Lodhran University Movement motivated and mobilized the politicians, scholars, educationist, students, journalists, and other stake holder of District Lodhran. He highlighted the need of Lodhran University in following words:

Lodhran University will provide a compact base for educational revolution which positively effect the society and provide opportunities for all sectors of life. It will change the society with social, intellectual, political, religious and economic development. Socio-Economic Developmentwill support the people to facilitate each other for peaceful society. In year 2015, Lodhran University Movement has achieved its first mile stone with support of local media groups and newspapers. A massive complain was launched by Founder Prof. Ashraf Malik and large number stake holders of society welcomed, joined and supported Lodhran University Movement-LUM. Some important name includes Dr. Syed Muhammad Jaffer Raza, Syed Hussain Raza Rizvi Advocate, Malik Muhammad Imran Rehan secretry Press Club, Malik Azhar Langa Advocate, Ch. Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Abdullah Jan, Ch. Muhammad Saleem President Traders, Rao Ihsan Ul Haq, Sh. Iftikhar Tari, Dr Zamin Raza, Kanwar Ali Murtaza Khan, Rao Ali Hussain Khan, Sardar Naweed Maqbool Dogar Advocate, Malik Muhammad Akbar President DHA, Mirza Saleem Akhtar Chairman Olympia Association, Muhammad Tufail Thakar Advocate, Ch. Muhammad Ali Advocate, Rao Amir Ali Khan President Lodhran Press Club, Imran Ali Awan Chairman National Press Club, Riyasat Ali Abbasi etc.

Dr. Ashraf Malik Founder LUM has initiated a series of meetings to motivate the political leaders of all political parties during August-October 2015. He discussed in detail the need and importance of Lodhran University and achieved the support of Rana Mumtaz Ahmed Noon President Pakistan Peoples Party,Mr Zubair Jadi President Pakistan Muslim League (N), Mirza Nasir Baig former President PPP.,Dr Sher Muhammad Awan President Pakistan Tehreek Insaf(PTI), Syed Seed Ahmed Kazmi President Jamiat Ulma Islam, Qari Muhamad Idrees President Jamiat ulma Pakistan, and Khawja Sharif Muhammad Aamir Korija Pakistan Awami Tehreek(PAT).

He explained the need and importance of Lodhran University to the political leader and representative of District Lodhran in Provincial and National Assemblies. Mr Abdul Rehman Kanju MNA, Mr Siddiq Khan Balouch MNA, Mr Aamir Iqbal Shah MPA, Mr Zubair Khan MPA, Mr. Ahmed Khan MPA, Mr Sajjad Hussain Joiya, and Mr Jhangir Sultan Bhuta MPA aggregated with Prof. Malik and assured him to place demand of Lodhran University to Chief Minister of Punjab Mr Shehbaz Sharif and Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif.

Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif agreed the demand of people of Lodhran. In November 2015, Mr Nawaz Sharif PM announced in public meeting at Lodhran to establish Lodhran University in two years. He promised the people that Lodhran university will be a university with all advanced facilities.
