Plaridel is a third (3rd) Income Class municipality in the province of Misamis Occidental, Philippines. According to 2015 Census of Population, it has a population of 38,900 people, covering the total Land Area of 8,000 hectares.[3]
Plaridel became a municipality in 1907. Its original name was Langaran, after the river which drains along its shorelines. Tales have it, that the first settlers of Langaran were the Subanens. Farming, fishing and hunting are their means of livelihood. With their burn and slash or "kaingin" a way of farming. The settlers opened track of fields out of the wide forest for agricultural purposes. Evidences that proved the existence of Subanens in the town was their antique "Orayao" of burial places, which was discovered by the irrigators of NGADIA, the time when they constructed their irrigation canals at Clarin, when they accidentally dug burial jars, with human skeletons inside it. "Langaran" was believed to come from the word "Langanan" a native tongue which means "delay". It was said that when a Spanish came to visit the place, and asked to what was the name of the settlement, the natives just answered "Langanan". However, Spaniards found a hard time to pronounce and distinguish "r" from "n", therefore uttered "Langaran"—which was believed to be the origin of the Place's name.
The town is accessible from Manila by air via the Dipolog Airport or Ozamiz Airport which is 68 kilometres (42 mi) away. Plaridel also has a harbor in Looc that is very well sheltered from strong winds. A passenger boat (Lite Shipping) travels to Cebu City everyday, with stops in Siquijor and Tagbilaran, Bohol. Daily boat service to Cebu is also available in the port of Ozamiz City about 67 kilometres (42 mi) to the south. Its first Municipal President was Ismael Palma, who led the Municipality in the past few centuries. Langaran long time ago, was composed of two(2) sitios namely; Daisug (now the town Lopez Jaena) and Solinog (now the town Calamba).
The current Municipal Mayor of the town is Engr. Diego Cacho Ty, a businessman, who won the 2016 election with a lead of 3,359 votes against his opponent; former Mayor-turned Governor and Congressman, Atty. Ernie D. Clarete.
