Project Runway: Junior is an American reality television series that premiered on November 12, 2015 on Lifetime. It is the eighth direct spin-off series of another series, Project Runway, which airs on the same network. It featured twelve teen designers aged between 13 and 17. The designers were described by Tim Gunn as "kids [who] have grown up watching this show" (Project Runway).[2]
The show was co-hosted by Tim Gunn and Hannah Jeter, with Gunn also serving as the designers' workroom mentor. In his role as mentor, Tim Gunn had a "Tim Gunn Save" with which he could bring back an eliminated designer once during the season at his discretion. The three judges were fashion designer Christian Siriano (Project Runway Season 4's winner), fashion critic and designer Kelly Osbourne and Aya Kanai, Executive Fashion Director at Cosmopolitan and Seventeen magazines. Of note, unlike other versions of Project Runway, the only episode with a guest judge was the finale.[3]
According to Executive Producer Sara Rea, Project Runway: Junior is a re-creation of the original adult series with no concessions in the difficulty of challenges or critiques being made for the contestants' ages. The unconventional challenge featured items from a car wash and one challenge was introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama.[4] The winner of Project Runway: Junior received a full scholarship to the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California, a complete home sewing and crafting studio provided by Brother, a feature in Seventeen Magazine and a $25,000 cash prize to help launch their line plus a Visionworks shopping spree.[3]
In May 2016, Lifetime renewed Project Runway: Junior for a second season in a deal with The Weinstein Company. [5]

Episodes
Episode 1: Welcome to New York
Original airdate: November 12, 2015
The young designers met with Hannah and Tim on the Gotham West rooftop. For this "First Impressions" challenge they were to create a look in one day that best showed off their design style while using the city of New York as inspiration. The designers were given 30 minutes to sketch and take pictures. The next morning they visited Mood with 45 minutes to shop and a $200 budget for materials. During the critique, the winner Samantha shared that she only spent $43 at Mood. Samantha's win gives her immunity for the second challenge.[6][7]
- WINNER: Samantha
- OUT: Sami
Episode 2: An Unconventional Carwash!
Original airdate: November 19, 2015
Episode 2 was an unconventional materials challenge. In one day, the young designers were required to create garments out of items found at a carwash. They had three minutes to stuff two bags full of sponges, car mats, hoses, license plates, reflectors, fuzzy dice, and more.[8] Of note is four designers were judged high and two low before a winning designer and an eliminated designer were selected. Zachary, as the winner, has immunity for the third challenge.
- WINNER: Zachary
- OUT: Ysabel
Episode 3: Teamwork is Hard
Original airdate: December 3, 2015
In a challenge sponsored by Simplicity, the designers were divided into two teams of five to create cohesive mini collections inspired by the decades. Tim instructed the competitors to take their “own youthful, contemporary lens and [bring] it to what is otherwise a vintage pattern.” Team 1940s, with Victoria, Zachary, Zach, Jaxson, and Bridget, was declared the winning team. Bridget was the winning designer and Simplicity recreated her look as a pattern. She also earned immunity for the fourth challenge. Team 1960s, with Matt, Peytie, Jesse, Samantha and Maya, was the losing team. The judges elected to not eliminate a designer, but forewarned of a double elimination in episode 4. Only two members from each team were allowed to accompany Tim on a trip to Mood. A lack of communication left some contestants without the agreed upon fabric(s).[9]
- WINNER: Bridget
- OUT: None
Episode 4: OMG! That's Michelle Obama
Original airdate: December 10, 2015
First Lady Michelle Obama surprised the designers by introducing the challenge inspired by Let Girls Learn, a worldwide initiative to support adolescent girls in getting an education. Each designer was to create a fashionable look for the “modern girl-on-the-go” whether she was dressing for school, sports, travel, work or social time. In addition to immunity (last one of the season), the winner, Peytie, earned the opportunity to design a backpack with Land’s End. Sales of this backpack were to support Let Girls Learn. The judges followed through with the double elimination, eliminating Jesse and Victoria.[10]
- WINNER: Peytie
- OUT: Jesse & Victoria
Episode 5: Race to the Red Carpet
Original airdate: December 17, 2015
A cast member of the Broadway musical Finding Neverland helped with introducing this episode's challenge. The designers were to create a red carpet look suitable for an opening night on Broadway. The competitors were placed in teams of two and given just five hours to prepare for the runway using only fabric from mini-Mood. To accomplish this difficult challenge the teams were paired with a Project Runway alumnus -- Zach and Samantha with Samantha Black (season 11), Zachary and Matt with Amanda Valentine (seasons 11 and 13), Maya and Peytie with Fabio Costa (season 10) plus Bridget and Jaxson with Sonjia Williams (season 10). The judges chose two winners, Maya & Peytie, while eliminating Matt.[11]
- WINNERS: Maya & Peytie
- OUT: Matt
Episode 6: Superstar Clients
Original airdate: January 7, 2016
The designers' superstar clients are Knicks City Dancers. Each client needs a look for a different occasion from an outfit for weekend brunch in the city to a Bohemian look for a summer trip to Barcelona. The competitors' challenge is to meet their clients' needs while staying true to their personal design style. Zach's weekend brunch look is declared the winner while Bridget was eliminated for an outfit none of the four judges considered Bohemian.[12]
- WINNER: Zach
- OUT: Bridget
Episode 7: #OOTD
Original airdate: January 14, 2016
This was the Seventeen magazine challenge with the winners' outfits to be showcased in the publication. The contestants roamed New York City for 30 minutes in search of an #OOTD (Outfit of the Day) to be used as inspiration for their design. They then had $200 to spend at Mood. During critiques Tim had concerns about some of the designers' fabric choices so he opened Mini Mood for 15 minutes to allow them to pick alternatives. Both winners, Maya and Samantha, made separates that could be mixed and matched for the magazine feature. It was the last episode for Jaxson and Zach after an emotional double elimination.[13]
- WINNERS: Maya & Samantha
- OUT: Jaxson & Zach
Episode 8: Make A Statement
Original airdate: January 21, 2016
In the final challenge to determine who will compete during New York Fashion Week, the designers were instructed to "be your own muse". Their designs were to reflect a personal journey or make a personal statement. Once in the workroom, Tim gave the competitors the additional challenge of using iron-on transfers to create a textile to be used in their design. They had a $400 budget at Mood and one day to make their garments. Maya, Samantha and Peytie were advanced by the judges. Zachary was eliminated by the judges, but Tim used his "Tim Gunn Save" so he also was advanced to compete at New York Fashion Week.[14]
- ADVANCE: Maya, Samantha and Peytie
- SAVE: Zachary
Episode 9: Finale Part 1
In the first part of the finale, the finalists are given four weeks and $4,000 to create a six-look collection to show at New York Fashion Week. After three weeks at home the designers return to NYC to be mentored by Tim. Peytie designed for a girl who has “endless stamps on her passport”. Her goal was that each finale piece look like it was purchased in a different place. Maya used hard and soft elements, leather and floral brocade respectively, to convey a “Warrior Princess”. Samantha’s collection was a feminine version of military uniforms. Zachary aimed to showcase a different design side than that shown during the regular season, one with light elements and lighter colors. When the designers returned to NYC a second time they presented two looks to the judges. General feedback was that the designers needed to pay close attention to fit and finishes and style their models for a youthful customer.[15]
- ADVANCE: Maya, Samantha, Peytie, and Zachary
- OUT: No One
Episode 10: Finale Part 2
After the judges’ critique the designers were offered a $250 Mood trip to supplement their materials. They completed finishing touches before sending their six looks down the finale runway. Bella Thorne served as a guest judge. Maya, the youngest contestant, was crowned the winner. Samantha was runner-up with Peytie and Zachary earning third and fourth place.[16]
- WINNER: Maya
- RUNNER-UP: Samantha
- THIRD PLACE: Peytie
- FOURTH PLACE: Zachary
