Stig Broeckx (born May 10, 1990 in Mol) is a Belgian cyclist signed to Lotto–Soudal.[1] As of September 2016 he is in a minimally conscious state following a crash.[2]
Career
During the 2016 Tour of Belgium, Broeckx was in a crash involving 19 riders caused by motorbikes on a descent. He was one of the 11 riders hospitalized.[3] He was reported to suffer severe injuries and was placed in an induced coma at the hospital in Gent.[4] In June 2016, Lotto Soudal team issued a medical update explaining that Stig Broeckx is in a vegetative state with severe brain damage, with attempts to bring him out of his coma so far unsuccessful.[5] A further update in September 2016 stated that Broeckx is now being cared for in a rehabilitation centre in Overpelt, and is considered to be in a minimally conscious state.[6]
