Sweden participated in and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Swedish entry was selected through Melodifestivalen 2012, a national final format that consisted of four semi-finals, a second chance round and a final, organised by Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT). Loreen represented Sweden with the song "Euphoria", which qualified from the second semi-final and went on to win the contest in the final, scoring 372 points.[1][2]

Melodifestivalen 2012

Melodifestivalen 2012 was the Swedish music competition that selected Sweden's 52nd entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, this time for the 2012 competition. Hosted by Sarah Dawn Finer, Gina Dirawi and Helena Bergström, 32 songs competed in a six-week-long process that consisted of four semifinals on 4, 11, 18 and 25 February 2012, a second chance round on 3 March 2012, and a final on 10 March 2012.[3][4] Eight songs competed in each semifinal - the top two qualified directly to the final, while the third and fourth placed songs qualified to the second chance round.

In the first semifinal held at the VIDA Arena in Växjö on 4 February, the songs "Mystery" performed by Dead by April and "Euphoria" performed by Loreen qualified to the final, while the songs "Sean den förste Banan" performed by Sean Banan and "Jag reser mig igen" performed by Thorsten Flinck and Revolutionsorkestern qualified to the second chance round.[5]

In the second semifinal held at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg on 11 February, the songs "Soldiers" performed by Ulrik Munther and "Shout It Out" performed by David Lindgren qualified to the final, while the songs "Stormande Hav" performed by Timoteij and "Baby Doll" performed by Top Cats qualified to the second chance round.[6]

In the third semifinal held at the Tegera Arena in Leksand on 18 February, the songs "Why Am I Crying" performed by Molly Sandén and "Mirakel" performed by Björn Ranelid featuring Sara Li qualified to the final, while the songs "Lovelight" performed by Andreas Johnson and "Youngblood" performed by Youngblood qualified to the second chance round.[7]

In the fourth semifinal held at the Malmö Arena in Malmö on 25 February, the songs "Why Start A Fire" performed by Lisa Miskovsky and "Amazing" performed by Danny Saucedo qualified to the final, while the songs "Land Of Broken Dreams" performed by Dynazty and "Don’t Let Me Down" performed by Lotta Engberg and Christer Sjögren qualified to the second chance round.[8]

In the second chance round held at the Rosvalla Nyköping Eventcenter in Nyköping on 3 March, the songs "Baby Doll" performed by Top Cats and "Jag reser mig igen" performed by Thorsten Flinck and Revolutionsorkestern qualified to the final.[9]

Final

The final of Melodifestivalen 2012 was held on 10 March 2012 at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm.[9] The two winners from each of the four semi-finals and the two Second chance winners qualified for the final, a total of 10 songs. A mix of televoting/SMS voting and international jury voting selected Loreen as the winner with the song "Euphoria".[1]

At Eurovision

Sweden competed in the second half of the second semi-final in Baku on 24 May 2012, following Croatia and preceding Georgia. Loreen received 181 points and placed 1st, thus qualifying for the final on 26 May.

In the final, Sweden was drawn to have performed 17th, after Greece and preceding Turkey. The Swedish entry received votes from 40 countries and won the contest, with only Italy failing to award them any points.[2] Loreen scored a total of 372 points, the second-highest winning score in the contest's history after Norway's 387 point win in 2009. Nevertheless, Sweden received a record set of 12 points from 18 countries. This was the fifth win for Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Marcel Bezençon Awards

The Swedish entry was awarded two of the three Marcel Bezençon Awards, which honour the best of the competing entries for the 2012 contest in different areas of achievement. The Artistic Award was presented to the best artist as voted by the commentators and the Composer Award was the best and most original composition as voted on by the participating composers.[13]
