"Love Unlimited" is a song by Bulgarian singer Sofi Marinova, which was chosen to represent Bulgaria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012.[1] The song contains the phrase "I love you" in ten languages.

Background

The music is by Yasen Kozev and Krum Georgiev, who previously wrote the song "Eagle", performed by Miroslav Kostadinov - Miro at the 2010 Bulgarian national Eurovision song selection, but they did not write this song specifically for Eurovision. Sofi Marinova had a version of the song in her cell phone for 6–7 months before she came up with the idea to participate with it in Eurovision.[2]

The lyrics

The lyrics of the song are by Doni Vasileva, who came up with the idea of using the words "I love you" in multiple languages. The message of the song is that song, pain, and love "[have] no boundaries, language, and colour" and are the same for everyone. The verses are entirely in Bulgarian language, but the choruses and the ending contain versions of the phrase "I love you" in a total of ten languages:

  10. I love you so much — words in English, with which the song ends

Other non-Bulgarian phrases in the chorus are يا حَبيبي /ya habibi/ and mon chéri, respectively "my beloved" in Arabic and "my dear" in French.

The song features words in three Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French), two Slavic languages (Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian) and two Turkic languages (Turkish, Azerbaijani), but only one Germanic language (English) is used. The Romani language is Sofi Marinova's mother tongue. Turkish, Greek and Serbian are the languages of three of Bulgaria's neighbouring countries - Turkey, Greece and Serbia. Greek and Turkish are official languages in Cyprus as well, while the languages of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro are all variants of Serbo-Croatian. Azerbaijani is the language of Eurovision 2012's host country, Azerbaijan.

To date it is the only Eurovision entry to include Azerbaijani lyrics, Azerbaijan itself having entered nine entries all in English.

At the Bulgarian national finals

After a preliminary selection process, the semi-finals of the Bulgarian national selection for Eurovision 2012 were held on 14 January 2012. The song "Love Unlimited" received the second most SMS votes (and was fifth with the jury) — with 2162 SMS votes and 93 points from the jury, after Desi Slava (DESS) and her song "Love is Alive" with 2396 SMS votes and 148 points from the jury.[3] At the final on 29 February, however, Sofi Marinova placed first by SMS votes and was third with the jury, while Desi Slava was second with the televoters and did not make it in the jury's top three.[4] On the other hand, in the final the band New 5 was third with televoters and first with the jury,[4] but in the case of a tie, the SMS votes take precedence, which is why the winner was Sofi Marinova.

Eurovision Song Contest 2012

The song performed at the second semi-final and narrowly missed out on qualification to the grand final, finishing in 11th place. Because Bulgaria received the same amount of points as Norway in the semi-final and tied with them for the 10th qualifying spot to the final, the organizers of the show resorted to the tiebreaker rule, which favored the country that had received points from more voting nations. Bulgaria had received points from 10 voting nations, whereas Norway had received points from 11 voting nations. Norway went on to qualify in 10th place.
