Toynbee School is an 11-16 (no sixth form) secondary school in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire. The head teacher is Mr Matthew Longden.[1][2]

History

Toynbee School was first formed in 1929 when it was called the 'Eastleigh Boys Senior School' and was based on Derby Road. In 1932 the school was moved to newer, more modern buildings on Leigh Road and became known as Toynbee Road Secondary Boys School. In 1964 the school moved again and became co-educational with the Chamberlayne Road Girls School. The school first became known as Toynbee School when it moved to the North End buildings on Leigh Road. Toynbee School became a comprehensive school after this move. Toynbee School moved to its present site on Bodycoats Road, Chandler's Ford in 1977.[3]

Curriculum

Toynbee School's curriculum is "broad and balanced"[4] according to the school so as to provide the framework for pupils to have the "skills, knowledge, attitudes and values which will help them play a full and useful role in all aspects of adult society."[1] Toynbee School has a school day longer than the national average.[1]

Pupils with specific learning difficulties receive special educational support.[1]

Facilities

Toynbee School has nine science laboratories, language rooms, maths rooms, English rooms, four ICT suites with broadband internet access, design technology rooms, art rooms, a theatre and dance studio, two music rooms with practice areas and a large sports hall with changing and storage facilities. There are also tennis courts, sports fields and hard court facilities. There is also a Learning Resource Centre staffed by a full-time librarian.[1]

Governors

School Governors help run the school. They have the responsibility of ensuring that the school is run according to the needs and wishes of the local community. They also have to support, protect and promote the interests of the school, its pupils and its staff. The school governing body has to take a strategic overview of school related issues.

School Governors do not have to be experts in education as the school believes this is the role of the headteacher and the teaching staff of the school.

School governors are expected to work as a member of the governing body with their best interests in the school and have to commit time to attend meetings and promote the school and its activities. They also have to become familiar with general education issues and developments as well as current issues and developments in the school.[5]
