Hamble School is a secondary school in Hamble-le-Rice, offering education to children between 11-16. Hamble College Skills Centre opened in September 2010, and offered courses including Construction, Engineering, Sports Science and Marine Engineering, until September 2013, when it started to be used for Maths classes. In 2014, the College removed its Post-16 options and the building became primarily used for Maths.
Geraldine Halley-Gordon retired as principal of the college and was succeeded by Lisa Croke who took over as headteacher of the school in April 2015.
Community system
The school is organised into same-year mentor groups, with all students and teachers part of one of four 'communities'. Most teachers at the school have a mentor group which they take for a 25 minute morning session and a five minute afternoon session. There are also a Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. These are nominated before their Year 10 comes to a close.
Students can apply to take on many other important roles, after this rearrangement of the pastoral system. Some of these include Sports Young Leaders and Arts Young Leaders, both of which help during events in their department.
The four communities are named after sporting venues, following on from the sporting school theme. These are Wembley, Wimbledon, Lords and Twickenham. Each community has a different tie colour and all students are required to wear their tie to show support of their community (with the exception of the prefect, who wears a different tie)
- Wembley - The leader of Wembley is Scott Weston. The colour of their tie is navy blue with light blue stripes.
- Wimbledon - The leader of Wimbledon is Laura Carrigan. The colour of their tie is navy blue with purple stripes.
- Twickenham - The leader of Twickenham is Patricia Evans. Patricia currently is head of student voice. The colour of their tie is navy blue with green stripes.
- Lords - The leader of Lords is Mike Skinner. The colour of their tie is navy blue with yellow stripes.
OFSTED
The school was visited by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) in November 2001, when the quality of teaching received an overall "good" for both Years 7-9 and 10-11.[1]
Since then, a number of renovations have taken place, including increasing the facilities, earning the school its Sports College status. This reached a climax with the opening of the Sports Complex in 2002. Recent site improvements include a Gymnastics Complex (opened in 2006), a dedicated Humanities (History, Religious Education and Geography) block, and renovation of the Technology, Music and Drama buildings. The most recent renovation to the school is the complete refurbishment of each of the Science teaching rooms.
In 2007 the school was visited by OFSTED again and received another "good" ranking overall.[2] In 2012, the school received a "satisfactory" ranking, generally needing improvement in teaching and behavior.[3] The school was set to be reviewed again near the end of 2014.
Timings
The school day begins at 8:30 with students leaving the school at 14:55. On Mondays, however, the school day ends at 14:35, due to after-school staff meetings.
Link School
Hamble College has an external link with Ferndale School in South Africa. A yearly festival takes place called Toplink, where students from younger years come to the school and raise funds for Ferndale. Every year a group of the 'Dreams and Teams' students go to visit the link school.
