Wuhan Yangtze International School (WYIS; 武汉长江国际学校[1]) is an English-language international school located within the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) in Wuhan, Hubei, China. WYIS uses an American curriculum and serves grades PreK-12.[2] It opened in 2003 as the South Lake International School. The school has expanded to over 200 students today, representing more than 35 countries and territories.
WYIS' mission is to educate the child socially, spiritually, intellectually, physically, and emotionally to become a dynamic individual of truth and excellence who positively contributes to society.
History
Wuhan Yangtze International School is a member of iSC, the International Schools Consortium. Since 1986, iSC has been devotedly serving the multinational community of China. iSC is a division of the LDi family of companies, an organization committed to leadership development, training, and transformation.
- WYIS first started out in 2003 as South Lake International School. It moved to San Jiao Hu Elementary School in the WEDZ in 2005, and it changed its name to its current one in 2007. In 2008, WYIS received full accreditation status and in 2011, received its official international school license from the national government of the PRC. Construction on its current campus started in 2012 and the school moved into the new campus in January 2014.
Early Childhood Center (ECC)
The WYIS Early Childhood Center (ECC) provides a secure and loving environment focused on on meeting each child’s social, academic, physical, and spiritual needs within an active learning environment.
ECC students learn how to interact with those around them in a multicultural setting in a safe and nurturing environment. Each classroom includes both a lead teacher and a teaching intern, ensuring that each student is provided with attention and care. Teachers use appropriate curriculum where students participate in hands-on learning, providing ECC students the opportunity to grow the necessary skills for a well-rounded development.
Elementary
Elementary classrooms are all equipped with a lead teacher and a teaching intern, ensuring students receive the attention and care needed for success. Units are divided into themes, which incorporate several subject areas around a central theme. This also increases interest in the subject and understanding by drawing from the real world and making real life connections. These units also help build an international perspective by incorporating different geographical and historical themes.
Students in Elementary also have to option to get involved in fine arts and sports-related after school activities, allowing them to explore other areas of interest and develop additional skills in an encouraging environment.
Secondary
Our Secondary education provides various and abundant courses to build students’ worldviews, character and skills. Small class sizes create the suitable environment, which focuses on communication and responsibility for growth. Students have an opportunity to build relationships with other students to train their social adjustment skills such as Fall Camp, morning advisory groups, assemblies, athletic teams. These activities create small, international communities; however students could engage in these events to reveal their true color and reinforce community strength. Each year has a theme such as “YOLO” (2014-2015), which gives certain goal to seek and build an ability to answer the large, world questions.
Middle school and high school have slightly different curriculums. Middle school focuses on developing responsibility, gaining independence, growing in understanding and empathy for others. However, High school deepens subject knowledge, and explores various leadership and career paths. Twenty four credits are required for high school graduation, based on the semester credit system.
