F.C. Internazionale Milano mounted its first serious Serie A title assault for several years, with a dubious penalty for Juventus in a match against the Milanese side a few games from the end of the season being the pivotal point. The consolation prize was winning the UEFA Cup, following a 3-0 victory against Lazio in the final.

The most noticeable difference compared to Inter's previous seasons was the availability of a world-class striker in Ronaldo. The young Brazilian was bought on a world record transfer fee from Barcelona, and scored 34 goals in all competitions
