Barangay Maduya is one of the fourteen urban barangays (barrio) comprising the progressive municipality of Carmona in the province of Cavite, Philippines.[3] It lies about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) away from the town proper of Carmona, situated in the eastern part of the municipality. It is the forefront barangay of Carmona from Metro Manila. It is located right at the Carmona or Governor's Drive exit of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), a controlled-access highway originating from Manila to the north, linking the southern provinces of Luzon to Manila. Governor's Drive is the main road of Carmona and the eastern gateway to the province of Cavite from SLEX. According to the 2010 Census, Maduya has a population of 8,754 people with an area of 182 hectares (450 acres).[2][1]

Barangay profile

Barangay Maduya is located on the easternmost section of the municipality of Carmona. The eastern boundary is located about a kilometer east of the South Luzon Expressway. It is surrounded to the north, east and south by the city of Biñan, Laguna; by the municipality of General Mariano Alvarez (GMA) and Barangay Cabilang Baybay to the northwest; by the poblacion (town center) to the west; and Barangay Lantic to the southwest.[1]

According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 8,754 people in a land area of 182.0 hectares (450 acres).[2][1] It is the 5th largest barrio in area in the municipality of Carmona occupying almost 6% of the total land area of the municipality.[1][4]

The topography of Barangay Maduya is generally flat with slope of 0-3%.

Climate

Barangay Maduya has two pronounced seasons – the dry season, which usually begins in November and ends in April, and the rainy season, which starts in May and ends in October. Barangay Maduya is cool periods are from December to February while summer months are from April to May. March, April, May, June, and July are the warmest months with an average temperature of 28.8 °C (83.8 °F). January, February and December are cooler with an average temperature of 25.8 °C (78.4 °F).

History

Maduya was only a sitio of Barrio Latag, the old name of Carmona town when it was still a barrio of the municipality of Silang, Cavite. The sitio was composed of only five houses inhabited by twelve families. On February 20, 1857, Carmona became a municipality and in turn, sitio Maduya was relegated into a barrio.

Etymology

The term Maduya came from the word "Maruya", a fritter made from rice flour with sliced saba banana, fried, and consumed as merienda snacks. Most inhabitants can cook the snack and were peddled around the town attracting customers by shouting "Maruya". Eventually, the vendors were shouting "Maduya", which became the name of the barrio.[5]

Developed on November 2001 in a 1.7 hectare lot in Barangay Maduya. It was funded in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture under a “1 million counterpart funding program.”

Carmona Public Market (CPM), the only public market in the town, was conceptualized in the latter part of 1995 Image during the first term of then incumbent mayor Roy M. Loyola as part of his efforts to boost the commercial status of the municipality. From its inception, the prime consideration in the design and construction of the public market is to emphasize its uniqueness. Other considerations were its accessibility to differently abled individuals and total shopping convenience for the patrons.

Economic profile

Barangay Maduya's progress accelerated after the conversion of more than half of hectares of farmlands into industrial areas in 1998. Garment industries, steel fabrication, microchips and semi-conductors, tool fabrication, bus assembly, bulb factories, die casting and other small and medium-scale industries currently operate in the municipality. These investments continue to provide local employment, generate export earnings, increase municipal revenues and serve as vehicles for technology transfer. Foreign investments are pouring in as export-oriented industries continue to flourish.

Cottage industries include metal works, metalcraft, footwear industries, concrete products, tricycle assembly, rattan handicrafts and bakeries. Manufacturing firms engaged in handicraft (bags and shoes), furniture making, business retailing, personal and business services, and food based enterprises contribute to the municipality’s trade and commerce. Mercantile activities in the municipality are concentrated in the Poblacion area and along the Governor’s Drive.

Education

Two (2) colleges providing higher education are situated in Barangay Maduya. Primary and secondary education are served by a private school and a public elementary school, where a big number of students are studying. There are also two (2) Day Care Centers in the barangay.
