Calcutta Girls' High School (abbreviated as CGHS) is a private school for girls in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was founded in 1856 as a boarding school under the patronage of Lord Canning.

History

Calcutta Girls' High School was established by Lord Canning in 1856. It was supported by the Evangelical denominations of the city. In 1877, the management of the school was handed over to Bishop J.M.Thoburn of the Methodist Episcopal Church.The kindergarten department was started by Ms Emma Knowles, after she took charge in 1890. In 1899, Drill classes were started by the Principal,Miss Widdifield. In 1901, Ms. M. Storrs started setting up the school library and reading room.

The school prepares candidates for Indian certificate of secondary education (ICSE) examination (class X) And the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examination (class XII)

Co-curriculum activities

The clubs for various activities were introduced in 1933.

Special classes

[1] The Methodist Church in India now manages the school. The school teaches in the English language,[2] and teaches for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE / ISC).[3]
