The Government Engineering College, Kozhikode (GECK) was started by the government of Kerala, India, in August 1999. It is an engineering institution under the Department of Technical Education, Kerala. GECK has been rated consistently among the top technical institutes in kerala, with students admitted purely on the basis of merit. .

GECK graduates are employed in public and private sector companies within India and abroad. Many of the alumni occupy top managerial and key technical position in corporates across the globe.

The institution is located in WestHill. The institute has five major engineering departments: Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Electronics and Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering.

Courses

The college offers five B.Tech and three M.Tech courses, with an intake of 66 regular students and six lateral entry students per year for each B.Tech courses and 18 students for each M.Tech courses. The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut and follows its curricula and syllabi.

History

The college began in 1999 in the hostel building of the Government Polytechnic at West Hill. After seven years, on 24 July 2006, the college has been shifted to its own buildings. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the new block of the college.[1]

A National Level Technical Fest

LakshYa'11

A 3-day technical fest.

LakshYa'13

The second version of the technical fest held at the college in 2013. A 3-day program was conducted by the college union. Fest included technical events, general events, gaming, exhibitions and a cultural night.

Lakshya'13 events included hardware and software design contests, paper presentations, quiz, and technical talks.

Clubs and other bodies

IEEE

With IEEE and/or IEEE Society memberships students can stay current in their chosen technology profession, keep in touch with their peers, and advance their careers. The GEC IEEE unitT in Calicut Government Engineering College will provide help to the students to improve their career in the electronic and instrumentation field.

Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGPC)

GECK has a tie-up with other colleges to give the help for the students to attend off campus recruitment. CGPC conducts workshops and training programs for students.

Members: Any person that have completed graduation/postgraduation from GEC Kozhikode is an ordinary member of the GECK Alumni association. Alumni Day 2014 The Alumni executive committee meeting of 20 July 2014 decided to conduct Alumni Day on 16 August 2014. Entrepreneurship Development Club (EDC)

EDC has functioned in the college since March 2004. EDC is an initiative of the Department of Industries and Commerce, government of Kerala, through the Kerala Institute for Entrepreneurship Development, KIED.

National Service Scheme (NSS Technical Cell)

The NSS unit of the college provides opportunity to the students and staff to gain experience in social service activities. The unit organises programmes inside and outside the campus. The motto of the organization is "Personality development through social service." The volunteers develop leadership qualities by organising and attending seminars and orientation programmes.

Arts Club

The Arts Club 'MALAR VADI ARTS CLUB' organises cultural events in the college in association with the College Union Inauguration and Annual Arts Day. It provides chances for young talents to enhance their artistic skills by organising workshops and training programmes.

Energy and Environment Conservation Club (EECC)

The EEEC, functioning under the Energy Conservation Society of Kerala, conducts programs to enlighten the students with energy and environment related problems. The objective of EECC is to foster conservation of energy and protection of the environment so as to promote sustainable development of mankind. The society caters to energy auditing, reuse and recycling technology for waste water utilisation, pollution control, environmental protection measures and promoting awareness among the public.

Centre for Continuing Education (CCE)

The CCE started as a sub-centre of CCE, Trivandrum. The objectives of the centre are to impart training to unemployed youth, to offer full-time and non formal programmes to upgrade the management skills, to conduct vocational training to meet the needs of industry and business, to conduct in service training to workers in industries, to develop and publish training materials for regular and distance programmes etc.

Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC)

IIIC functions as a forum of interaction between industries and institute through product-testing, consultancy, and research and development. Industry helps the institution by sponsoring R&D activities, involving themselves in the curriculum preparation and providing placement to deserving candidates. The testing and laboratory facilities in the college are used by the industries for their needs. The innovative ideas of the students are pooled for commercial application. The cell maintains liaison with the District Industries Centre.

Technology Business Incubator (TBI)

A Technology Business Incubator (TBI) was launched in the institution in 2005. TBI helps students to convert an innovative idea into a technological product. TBI is being implemented through Entrepreneurship Development Club (EDC) of the institution.

Facilities

Laboratory /Workshop

The college has lab and workshop facilities for all the four engineering disciplines along with labs for applied sciences.

Central Computing Facility

The college has a computing facility with PC workstations. A LAN facility running on Linux Servers form the back bone of the centre. The centre is equipped with computing environments including Unix, Sun Solaris, and Linux, and software tools like MS Visual Studio, C++, C, FORTRAN, PASCAL, Java, Matlab, AutoCAD, Kylix VHDL, Innoveda VHDL, Nisa, and QT Designer A leased line connects the CCF to the internet. The centre offers free internet connectivity to the students and faculty members.

Library

The Technical Library and Documentation Centre is computerized. International and national technical journals and periodicals are subscribed in the library. A computerized library information system with search facility is implemented. The audio-visual section maintains CD-ROMS on engineering subjects. The project and seminar reports of students are kept. A section is devoted to general reading books. Books to prepare for competitive examinations like GATE, GRE, and TOEFL are stocked.

Special facilities

The college has direct uplink with EDUSAT, and has six IT enabled smart class rooms with LCD projectors and laptops.

Sports and games facilities

The college lacks enough facilities for sports and games. The college shares its college cricket and football ground with Govt Polytechnic. Facilities for basketball, volleyball and badminton are available.

Other facilities

The college provides transport facilities to all students staying in and aroung Kozhikode city through college buses. The college runs its own cafeteria.
