The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) is an independent university in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. Founded in 1955, it is the oldest business school outside of North America.[4]

IBA was established in 1955 in collaboration with the Wharton School, later the University of Southern California set up various facilities at the Institute and several prominent American professors were assigned to the IBA. It remained a constituent business school within the University of Karachi until, in 1994, when its status was elevated to an independent chartered university by the Sindh Government. Since 2003, IBA has expanded from a purely graduate business school to an inter-disciplinarity university with undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs.[5]

IBA, today, is one of Pakistan's selective and highest-ranked institutes particularly known for its business program.[6][7] It is one of the two Pakistani business schools to be awarded the coveted certification by the South Asian Quality System.[8] IBA today has a campus with a covered area of 750,000 sq.ft mark and a student body of over 6,000 student's.[9] IBA has collaborations' with 15 institutions worldwide, which include Babson College, Indian School of Business, S. P. Jain Institute and the Northwestern University. It count's several prominet public figure's and business leader's among its alumni, staff and student's including the incumbent President Mamnoon Hussain, former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Ishrat Hussain, Asad Umer.[10]

History

IBA is the brainchild of Mehmood Qadir (M.Q.), established in 1955 by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored the program and approached the Wharton faculty to establish a business school in Karachi, Pakistan.

The IBA offered post-graduate programs only for day scholars. In 1957, an evening program in graduate studies was started to cater to the needs of working executives and managers who were interested in furthering their careers through part-time business studies. In 1982, a three-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) (Honors) program was introduced; this was upgraded to a four-year program by the President Pervez Musharraf administration. The institute's graduate program offering includes executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) for banking and financial services professionals, corporate managers, and public sector executives. These programs require work experience in the industry, resulting in a high average age of the class – upwards of 30 years. Till 1994, the University of Karachi awarded degrees to the graduates. In that year, the Sindh Assembly elevated the institute's status to that of a degree-awarding institution.

The Center for Computer Studies (now renamed as the Faculty of Computer Science) was established in 1983 with the collaboration of IBM, Pakistan. It offered a diploma in systems analysis. It now offers BBA (MIS), BS (Economics and Mathematics), MBA (MIS) and BS (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology), MS (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology), and Ph.D. programs. In addition, a Ph.D. program in MIS/Computer Science and Engineering/ICT was launched in August 2005. The Ph.D. degree has been expanded to include Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence, Cryptography, Numerical Analysis and Numerical Computing. The Center for Computer Studies is ranked number 1, according to the Higher Education Commission rankings.[11]

When established, the university had its only campus, called University campus, at Karachi University. Later another campus, known as City campus, was established for evening studies. City campus now holds morning and evening classes.

In 2006, the Institute of Business Administration was granted 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land by the Sindh Government for the development of an Education City in Karachi.[12] The Tabba foundation in Pakistan donated the institute Rs.120 million for upgradate of facilities on the IBA campuses.[13]

The United States government and the IBA are to establish a centre for entrepreneurship at the school to support new businesses, help create Pakistani enterprises and link students with private sector venture capitalists.[14]

IBA has also started its Entrepreneurship Development Program[15] in collaboration with Sindh Board of Investment.[16]

Dean & Director

After the retirement of Dr. Ishrat Hussain from the post of Dean and Director of Institute of Business Administration Karachi in 2016, Dr. Farrukh Iqbal has been appointed as new Dean and Director. Governer of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad, has appointed Dr. Farrukh Iqbal as Director Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, for a period of four years.[17]

Dr. Farrukh Iqbal has more than thirty years of Research and Management experience in the World Bank across a diverse range of countries and sectors. He holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University, USA. Among sectors, he has worked and published on various aspects of economic development including growth, poverty, small and medium enterprises, trade and foreign investment, health insurance, local government development, and political economy issues.[18]

Following the retirement of Dr Ishrat Hussain (Dean and Director of Institute of Business Administration, Karachi), Dr. Sayeed Ghani, Associate Professor and Associate Dean — Faculty Computer Sciences, IBA was appointed as the acting Dean and Director Institute of Business Administration, Karachi as of March 2016. Dr. Ghani has a B.S. from MIT and M.S. and Ph.D from Columbia University in Electrical Engineering. Later on Dr. Farrukh Iqbal was elected as the official Dean and the director of IBA

Dr. Ishrat Hussain holds a master's degree in Development Economics from Williams College and a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University. He is a graduate of the Executive Development Program jointly sponsored by Harvard, Stanford and INSEAD. He was also the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan's Central bank from 2 December 1999 to 1 December 2005.[19]
