Peter Ian Vincenti (born 7 July 1986) is a Jersey professional footballer who plays for League One club Rochdale and the Jersey national team. He primarily plays as a winger, although he has also been deployed in attacking midfield, and as a forward.

Vincenti began his career as a youth player for First Tower United, where he played for only one year, before moving to his hometown club St. Peter. He went professional in 2005, spending two years with St. Peter, while also playing for the Jersey national team at the Island Games in 2007. Shortly after, he was offered a trial at Millwall and impressed in three pre-season friendlies, subsequently earning a short-term contract with the club. However, he failed to break into the first team and left the club when his contract expired in January 2008. He was signed by Hertfordshire side Stevenage Borough in the same month, and was part of the side that earned promotion to the Football League during the club's successful 2009–10 campaign. In October 2010, Vincenti joined Conference Premier side Mansfield Town on an initial three-month loan. Shortly after returning to his parent club, he signed for Aldershot Town, spending two-and-a-half years with the club and making over 100 appearances. In May 2013, Vincenti made a permanent transfer to League Two side Rochdale, after leaving relegated Aldershot.

Club career

Early career

Born in Saint Peter, Jersey, Vincenti was a product of the Jersey Football Association's centre of excellence,[3] and started his football career as a youth player at his local team St. Peter, before playing for the club's first team on a part-time basis.[4] He was top goalscorer for Jersey in the Island Games, held in Rhodes in June 2007,[3][5] and continued to perform well for his club; helping St. Peter challenge for the Jersey Football Combination Division One title.[6] This subsequently led to Vincenti winning Jersey Footballer of the Year in 2007.[3] His impressive club form led to interest from Millwall, and Vincenti was offered a trial with the London based club in July 2007.[3] He played in three pre-season friendlies for the club against Tooting & Mitcham United, Kingstonian, and Sutton United respectively,[7] and did enough to earn a four-month contract that ran until December 2007.[7] On securing his move to Millwall, Vincenti said "I'm delighted, this is a great opportunity for me and hopefully I can move forward".[4] However, although Vincenti was a regular in the club's reserve team, he failed to make a single first team appearance for Millwall during his short tenure at the club — making the substitute's bench once in a game against Swindon Town.[8][9][10]

Stevenage

At the start of 2008, when his contract at Millwall expired, Vincenti joined Stevenage Borough on a free transfer.[11] He made his debut for the club in a 5–0 victory against Droylsden, a game in which Vincenti assisted the third goal.[12] He continued to feature regularly for Stevenage towards the latter stages of the club's stuttering 2007–08 campaign, playing a total of twelve times, and scoring his first goal for the club in a 3–1 win over Crawley Town in March 2008.[13][14] Vincenti was transfer-listed at the end of the season following manager Graham Westley's reappointment in May 2008, and was deemed surplus to requirements.[15]

However, Stevenage started the 2008–09 season in bad form, losing three out of the first four opening games, conceding 13 goals in the process.[16] As a result, Vincenti started in the club's fifth game of the season, a 1–1 draw with Crawley Town, where Vincenti played a defensive midfield holding role.[17] Vincenti's return to the first team coincided with an upturn in form for the Hertfordshire outfit, and he was taken off the transfer list by Westley in September 2008. He scored the only goal of the game against Stevenage's local rivals Woking in November 2008, striking the ball first time from 30 yards that went in off the crossbar.[18] He also scored Stevenage's second goal against Lewes in a 2–0 win at The Dripping Pan, coming on as a substitute in the 89th minute and scoring with his first touch in injury-time.[19] In January 2009, Vincenti started a reserve match against Southend United reserves in an unfamiliar role as a striker, and scored four goals in a 5–1 win.[20] The following game, he came on as an 74th-minute substitute against Kettering Town, and played upfront, scoring the winner ten minutes later.[21] A month later, Vincenti scored a 93rd-minute winner in the second leg of the FA Trophy semi-final against Ebbsfleet United, as the club booked their place in the final at Wembley Stadium.[22] He subsequently started in the final as Stevenage beat York City 2–0.[23] In total, Vincenti featured 31 times during the club's 2008–09 campaign, scoring four times.[24]

Before the start of the 2009–10 season, it was announced that Vincenti was to be loaned to Conference South side Woking on a three-month deal after playing in a trial match for the club.[25] The following day, Stevenage played out a 0–0 draw with Woking in their final pre-season fixture, and despite joining the latter on-loan, Vincenti featured for his parent club.[26] Shortly after, it was then announced that Vincenti's loan deal to Woking had fallen through after Graham Westley decided he wanted to keep the player as cover.[27] Vincenti featured in five of the first six games of the season, all of which as a substitute,[28] and started the following game against Histon, but was sent-off in the sixth minute for violent conduct.[29] In October 2009, he came off the bench to score a 94th-minute winner in the FA Cup against Chelmsford City to prevent the game from going to a replay.[30][31] It proved to be Vincenti's only goal of the season, playing a total of 26 times during the club's successful campaign[32] — a season that witnessed Stevenage earn promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history.[33][34] At the end of the season, it was announced that Vincenti had signed a contract that keeps him at the club until July 2011.[35]

Ahead of the 2010–11 season, Vincenti scored in a pre-season friendly against his former employers, Millwall, in a 2–1 win.[36] He subsequently started in the club's first ever Football League match against Macclesfield Town in August 2010, scoring Stevenage's first ever Football League goal in the sixth minute of the match; heading in Charlie Griffin's cross from close-range in a match that ended 2–2.[37] Vincenti's goal was also the first goal of the 2010–11 League Two season.[37] During his three years at Stevenage, Vincenti scored seven times in 75 appearances.[38]

Mansfield Town (loan)

In October 2010, Vincenti joined Conference Premier side Mansfield Town on an initial three-month loan deal, with a view to it being made permanent in January 2011.[39][40] He made his Mansfield debut in the club's 4–1 home loss to Crawley Town, playing 75 minutes of the match before being substituted.[41] Vincenti made four appearances during the first month of his loan spell, but returned to Stevenage prematurely following a change of management at Mansfield in November 2010.[42]

Aldershot Town

Vincenti signed for Aldershot Town on a free transfer in January 2011, signing an 18-month contract with the League Two club.[43] He was Dean Holdsworth's first signing for Aldershot, with Vincenti having previously played under Dean's brother, David, at Mansfield Town.[44][45] He made his debut for Aldershot on 15 January 2011, playing 78 minutes in the club's 1–1 away draw at Bury.[46] Vincenti scored his first goal for Aldershot a week later in a 3–2 home victory against Crewe Alexandra.[47] He scored two goals within the space of a week in February 2011, scoring a late equaliser in a 1–1 draw with Northampton Town,[48] followed by a consolation strike in a 2–1 home loss to Port Vale.[49] He scored further strikes against Cheltenham Town,[50] Bradford City,[51] and Rotherham United respectively,[52] taking his goal tally to six.[42] Vincenti made 22 appearances for Aldershot during the season,[42] with the club finishing in 14th place.[53]

He remained at Aldershot for the 2011–12 season, and scored his first goal of the campaign on 13 September 2011, heading in Alex Rodman's cross to double Aldershot's advantage in a 2–0 away win at Hereford United.[54] A month later, Vincenti was on target in another away win for the club, scoring Aldershot's second goal in the sixth minute of the match in an eventual 5–2 win against Dagenham & Redbridge.[55] It was to be Vincenti's last goal for almost five months,[56] ending his 21-game goal drought when he scored from just inside the area in a 2–2 draw with promotion chasing Crawley Town on 13 March 2012.[57] He scored the only goal of the game in a 1–0 home victory over Bristol Rovers on 27 March, scoring with a strike from the edge of the penalty area.[58] Three days after scoring the winning goal against Bristol Rovers, Vincenti signed a one-year contract extension with Aldershot, keeping him contracted to the club until June 2013.[59] Vincenti made 49 appearances during the campaign, scoring six times.[56]

His third season at Aldershot began with a 7–6 penalty shootout defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the League Cup on 11 August 2012, with Vincenti playing the first 90 minutes of the match.[60] It took Vincenti twenty games to open his goalscoring account for the campaign, scoring with a 30-yard shot just before half-time in Aldershot's 3–2 FA Cup victory away at Fleetwood Town on 1 December 2012.[61] Two weeks later, he doubled his goal tally for the season when he turned in Danny Hylton's cross to give Aldershot the lead in an eventual 4–2 home win over Rochdale.[62] He continued to play regularly during the second half of the campaign,[63] and scored one further goal that season, a close-range strike in a 2–1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Plymouth Argyle on 9 February 2013.[64] Vincenti made 46 appearances in his final season with the club, as Aldershot were ultimately relegated back to the Conference Premier after finishing bottom.[63][65] During his two-and-a-half year stay with the Hampshire club, he scored 15 times in 117 appearances in all competitions.[38]

Rochdale

Shortly after the end of the 2012–13 season, on 10 May 2013, Vincenti agreed to sign for League Two side Rochdale on a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract at Aldershot on 1 July.[66][67] He scored his first goal for the club with a 25-yard strike in a 3–0 win over Newport County on 12 October 2013.[68] His second goal came in the FA Cup against Torquay United on 9 November 2013.[69] He scored with the side of his foot in what was an early lead, and the first goal in the 2–0 defeat of Cheltenham Town that clinched the club's place in the League One.[70]

On 3 January 2015, Vincenti scored a penalty in Rochdale's 1–0 win over Nottingham Forest.[71] And like several of his team-mates, Vincenti extended his contract and will now stay with Rochdale until 2016.[72]

On 13 July 2015, Vincenti agreed a two-year contract extension keeping him at the club until 2018 [73]

Style of play

Vincenti has described himself as a "utility player" and considers his versatility as an asset.[74] When Vincenti was signed by manager Peter Taylor at Stevenage, he was originally deployed as a defensive midfielder, and would often play a "holding midfield" role.[12] Taylor described Vincenti as a box-to-box midfielder, saying he provides both defensive and attacking prowess. Vincenti says that his favourite position is at attacking midfielder, where he "can make late runs into the box and hope to get on the end of any crosses".[74] He also says he is comfortable playing in central midfielder and as a forward, but would ultimately "play anywhere the manager tells him to".[74] As for his strengths, Vincenti is "most comfortable with the ball at his feet" despite his 6 ft 4in frame.[74] He does consider his height to be an "attacking threat", which is one of the reasons he likes to arrive late into the box.[74] Mansfield Town manager David Holdsworth said that Vincenti's height "means he is very much a threat from set pieces".[75] Vincenti also says he "has a good shot on him" and likes to shoot from outside the area[74] — while at Stevenage he scored long-range strikes against Crawley Town and Woking respectively.[13][18]

Personal life

Vincenti studied Business Studies at Liverpool Hope University.[4] His father, also called Peter Vincenti, has previously managed the Jersey national football team.[76]
