Brunei competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's seventh appearance at the Summer Olympics. Brunei failed to register any athletes in two editions of the Games: 1992 in Barcelona and 2008 in Beijing.
Three Bruneian athletes received their spots to compete only in track and field and in badminton by wild card entries.[2] Sprinter Mohamed Fakhri Ismail was selected to carry the Bruneian flag in the opening ceremony.[1] Brunei, however, has yet to win its first ever Olympic medal.
Athletics
Brunei has received universality slots from IAAF to send two athletes (one male and one female) to the Olympics.[3][4][2]

Badminton
Brunei has received an invitation from the Tripartite Commission to send a badminton player in the men's singles event, signifying the nation's Olympic debut in the sport.[5]
