Summer Olympics appearances (overview)

The Maldives competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics.

Four Maldivian athletes were selected to the team for the Games, competing only in track and field and swimming. Half of them returned from London 2012: sprinter Afa Ismail and freestyle swimmer Aminath Shajan, who led the Maldivian squad as the nation's flag bearer in the opening ceremony.[1] Maldives, however, has yet to win its first ever Olympic medal.
