A special election will be held in 2017 to determine the member of the United States House of Representatives for Kansas's 4th congressional district. Incumbent Representative Mike Pompeo has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Following Pompeo's resignation, Governor Sam Brownback will have five days to declare a special election, which will be held between 45 and 60 days after it is called.[1]
Among Republicans, potential candidates include Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes, Former U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt, State Senators Michael O'Donnell, Susan Wagle and Ty Masterson, State Representatives Mark Kahrs, Trump National Coalition Director Alan Cobb, Wichita City Councilmember Pete Meitzner, and businessman Willis Hartman.[2][3] State Representative Mark Hutton will not run.[4] For the Democratic Party, court services officer Robert Tillman could run,[2][3] but attorney Dan Giroux will not.[4] Independents Miranda Allen and Jennifer Winn are interested in running.[4][5]
Nominees for each party will be selected by a district convention of party activists. Third party and independent candidates can gain ballot access if they can gather 17,000 signatures within the first 25 days after the election is called.[5]
